Most 2014 E-Class sedans, coupes, convertible, and wagons will come equipped with a 3.5-liter V-6 producing 302 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque in the E350. The E550, which is available with the sedan, coupe, and convertible body styles, is powered by a 4.6-liter V-8 making 402 hp and 446 lb-ft. Fuel economy is decent; E350 models achieve 19-20/27-30 mpg city/highway, and the E550 is rated 17-18/24-26 mpg.
The E250 Bluetec sedan, the most fuel-efficient E-Class, is powered by a 2.1-liter turbocharged diesel I-4 producing 195 hp and 369 lb-ft. It’s rated at 28/42 mpg in rear-drive configuration and 27/38 mpg with all-wheel drive. The E400 hybrid sedan is also available for buyers looking for a good combination of power and efficiency. It’s powered by a 3.5-liter hybrid V-6 with a combined output of 329 hp and 354 lb-ft and achieves 24/30 mpg.
The E63 AMG and E63 AMG S-Model sedan and wagon are the high-performance variants of the E-Class, offering precise handling and powerful acceleration without hurting ride quality. The more potent S-Model comes with a hand-built 5.5-liter turbocharged V-8 that produces 577 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque. The sedans are available with a less-powerful version (550 hp and 531 lb-ft). E63 AMG S-Model wagons are a unique breed, wrapping a highly capable performance machine in a practical body style.
Interior space is improved with more storage spaces because of the repositioning of the gear shift lever with a column-mounted stalk. Technology remains cutting edge in all E-Class models. A host of new safety features once available only on the full-size S-Class trickle down to the rest of the range. Features such as Distronic Plus with Steering Assist allow the car to follow other vehicles almost autonomously for a short time using a radar and camera to scan the road ahead.
The 2014 E-Class sedan and wagon have a four-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA (out of a possible five stars; the coupe and convertible have not been tested). E-Class sedans are considered a Top Safety Pick+ by the IIHS, earning a good score on all five categories (good is the highest possible score); the coupe achieved good ratings on four tests.
