Is the Land Rover Range Rover Sport a Good SUV?

Yes, the Land Rover Range Rover Sport is a good SUV, and it delivers better performance than many of its classmates. It handles well for its size, it rides comfortably, and it offers an array of powerful engines, including two V8s. It also lives up to the Land Rover reputation for off-road prowess. Inside, the Range Rover Sport looks great, has impeccable build quality, and offers plenty of technology.

Should I Buy the Land Rover Range Rover Sport?

There’s one big reason you may second-guess buying this Land Rover: its price tag. It’s one of the most expensive luxury midsize SUVs. It’s unquestionably a good vehicle, but you’ll probably get more bang for your buck with one of its rivals.

2021 vs. 2022 Land Rover Range Rover Sport: What’s the Difference?

The 2022 Land Rover Range Rover Sport has a slimmer engine lineup than the 2021 model, but it otherwise doesn’t see any major changes. The 2021 model offered a 254-horsepower turbodiesel powertrain and a 398-horsepower plug-in-hybrid setup, but neither is available in the 2022 model.

Land Rover Range Rover Sport Versus the Competition

Land Rover Range Rover Sport vs. Land Rover Range Rover Velar

The Range Rover Velar is another luxury midsize SUV from Land Rover, and it has much in common with Range Rover Sport. They both have strong engine performance, top-notch cabin materials, and many of the same tech and safety features. The Range Rover Sport can tow more, however, and it’s better suited for off-roading. It can also seat up to seven passengers in a pinch, whereas the Velar only seats five. On the other hand, the Velar’s starting price is about $13,000 lower than the entry-level Sport.

Land Rover Range Rover Sport vs. Land Rover Range Rover

Since it’s a luxury large SUV, you might think of the Range Rover as the Range Rover Sport’s big brother. The Range Rover is larger than the Sport, but the Sport actually holds more people, since the big Rover doesn’t offer a third row of seats. Beyond that, these two are pretty similar in terms of interior quality, feature availability, engine lineup, and driving dynamics. Oh, there is one other notable difference: The Range Rover’s starting price is about $25,000 higher than the Sport’s.

Range Rover Sport Interior: Beautiful and Comfortable

Range Rover Sport Interior Quality

When you think of Range Rover, you think of first-rate interiors, and the RR Sport delivers. It looks great thanks to classy, modern styling that isn’t too busy, and there are premium materials everywhere you turn.

Range Rover Sport Infotainment, Bluetooth, and Navigation

The Range Rover Sport’s Touch Pro Duo infotainment system has its ups and downs. The dual-screen setup is modern, the menu layouts are fairly intuitive, and the screens are easy to see from the driver’s seat. However, it takes multiple steps to adjust some settings, and the screen response time is a bit slow.

  • Standard infotainment features: two 10-inch touch screens, navigation, an eight-speaker Meridian audio system, satellite radio, HD Radio, Bluetooth, USB ports, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and a Wi-Fi hot spot
  • Available infotainment features: wireless device charging, three Meridian audio systems (with 13, 19, or 23 speakers), and a rear-seat entertainment system
  • Additional standard features: dual-zone automatic climate control and a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster
  • Other available features: a panoramic sunroof, tri- and quad-zone automatic climate control, a refrigerated center console, and Land Rover’s Activity Key (a waterproof wristband that lets you lock and unlock the vehicle)

Range Rover Sport Cargo Space

The Range Rover Sport provides 10.8 cubic feet of cargo space behind its optional third-row seats, 31.7 cubic feet with the third-row seats folded flat, and 63.7 cubic feet with both rear rows folded. While that’s plenty of space for weekend luggage and some large items, it’s not as much room as you get in some competitors.

How Many People Does the Range Rover Sport Seat?

In its standard configuration, the RR Sport seats five people, but you can add a third row to provide seating for up to seven people. You may not want to do that, however, as the third-row seats are cramped and uncomfortable. On the contrary, the first two rows provide plenty of head- and legroom, and they’re exactly the kind of plush, supportive accommodations you expect in a luxury SUV.

Range Rover Sport and Child Car Seats

The Range Rover Sport has two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the second-row outboard seats and a tether anchor for the rear middle seat.

Range Rover Sport Performance: Ready for Anything

Range Rover Sport Engine

There are four engines to choose from in the Range Rover Sport: two turbocharged inline six-cylinders that produce 355 and 395 horsepower, and two supercharged V8s that put out 518 and 575 horsepower. All engines are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Every engine can get the job done, as even the base inline-six provides plenty of juice for any driving situation and feels responsive when you hit the gas pedal. The more powerful turbo-six feels noticeably quicker, however, and many shoppers may decide it’s worth the upgrade.

Those seeking as many thrills as possible can opt for one of the models with the supercharged V8 engines. These bad boys will throw you back in your seat when you punch the throttle, with the high-performance SVR model dashing from zero to 60 mph in just 4.3 seconds.

Range Rover Sport Gas Mileage

This Land Rover gets average gas mileage for the class when equipped with either of the six-cylinder engines: 19 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway. Opt for one of the beefy V8s, however, and ratings drop off. You get just 17/22 mpg city/highway with the 518-horsepower V8 and 15/20 mpg with the 575-horsepower setup.

Range Rover Sport Ride and Handling

The Range Rover Sport is easy to drive. It has a smooth ride, even over rough pavement, and the steering is accurate. The RR Sport feels at home on both winding roads and crowded city streets, and though there’s some body lean around turns, this SUV never feels unstable.

Range Rover Sport Off-Road Performance

The Range Rover Sport is exceptionally capable if you want to go off-roading. Its height-adjustable air suspension articulates gracefully over rocks and through deep ruts, and its 10.9 inches of ground clearance in its highest setting allows the SUV to protect its underside from larger obstacles.

All models come equipped with Terrain Response, which includes traction control modes for rocks, sand, snow, and mud. Many off-road upgrades are available as well, including a low-speed crawl control system, a limited-slip differential, and a transfer case with high- and low-range gearing.

Range Rover Sport Towing Capacity

The Range Rover Sport can tow up to 7,716 pounds when properly equipped. The exception is the SVR model, which can tow up to 6,613 pounds. You can add features like trailer sway control and trailer backup assist to make life easier while you’re towing something.

Additional standard driver assistance features include rear cross traffic alert, vehicle exit warning, blind spot monitoring, traffic sign recognition, and driver drowsiness monitoring.

The Range Rover Sport HSE Dynamic trim checks in at $87,500. It comes with a 518-horsepower supercharged V8, a two-speed transfer case, a limited-slip differential, and additional off-road drive modes. The 2022 Land Rover Range Rover Sport is more fun to drive than most luxury midsize SUVs. It’s powerful and reasonably agile, and it’s plenty capable when the pavement ends. The interior looks amazing, and it features plush seats and lots of technology. This is one of the priciest vehicles in the class, but there’s plenty of evidence to suggest that it’s worth the money.
