best all around vacuum

Picking the best all around vacuum and the best all in one vacuum isn’t just about what has the most bells and whistles. A good vacuum has to do its job well (of course), be easy to maintain, be versatile enough to take on both carpets and hardwood floors, and be a good value for the money. We researched—and in some cases tested—the best all around vacuum cleaners on the market to find the ones that will make cleaning your home a faster and easier chore to handle.

Here, the best all around vacuum for your home.

The Best Vacuum Cleaner Overall

Blue and black Bissell CrossWave stick vacuum cleaner - best vacuum overall

Bissell CrossWave All-in-One Multi-Surface Cleaner3,164 Reviews$554.67Shop Now

Our dream device is something that takes the hassle out of cleaning, and the Bissell CrossWave does just that. The multifunctional tool can wash floors and rugs (without drenching them) and vacuum at the same time, so you don’t need to make a second pass with a mop afterwards. Get ready for shockingly dirty water when you dump out the tank. Other thoughtful touches rocket it to the top of our list: the floor/rug toggle is right at your fingertips for on-the-fly switching; the cleaning solution has a heady fresh scent; and a built-in storage tray for extra parts makes it easy to store everything together. The only downside is that it requires a bit of maintenance between jobs to clean it out and refill the solution.

  • The CrossWave is more than just the best vacuum cleaner; it also washes the floors as it sucks up dirt. Two functions for the price of one? Major win.
  • Its two tanks keep dirty water separate from the cleaning solution, which has a spring breeze scent to give you the satisfaction of a clean-smelling home.
  • The CrossWave works for both hard floors and area rugs. Simply press a button—right at your fingertips for less bending and fussing—to switch modes.
  • The removable brushroll is a blend of microfiber and nylon to scrub as it picks up dirt and crumbs. The brushroll is easy to clean, but you’ll also have to replace it occasionally.

The Draw

Amazed at how amazingly time-saving and portable this vacuum and floor cleaner combo is, and so very disgusted (in a good way) in what this machine is cleaning from my floors and area rugs!!!

–Jody P, Walmart customerThe Downside

It does not get right up to the trim so 1x a week I use a duster/mop to get the edges.

The Best Robot Vacuum

Black iRobot Roomba i7 wifi-connected vacuum cleaner - best robot vacuum

iRobot Roomba i7+ (7550) Wi-Fi Connected Robot Vacuum697 Reviews$999.98View Details

The promise of a robot vacuum is that you won’t have to lift a finger, but many models on the market don’t offer enough suction to rival regular vacuum cleaners or still require you to monitor and move it throughout your home. Though the price tag is steep, iRobot’s Roomba i7+ is worth the splurge because it delivers in a big way. It’s strong enough to tackle carpets with pet hair—plus its bags are designed to prevent allergens such as dust mites, pollen and mold from escaping back into the air—and can go two months without being emptied. Its smart technology edges out the competition, too. It can map your floorplan and constantly takes new measurements to adapt, and even connects to your smart devices for voice control. Check out our round-up of the best robot vacuums for even more options.

  • As one of the top models in the iRobot family, the Roomba i7+ offers some of the best suction among the brand’s robot vacuums, so that it not only cleans up large messes but also grabs pesky dust and allergens.
  • One big concern with robot vacuums is the fact that they tend to quickly fill with dirt, dust and hair. The iRobot Roomba i7+ automatically empties itself into a disposable bag that traps 99 per cent of pollen, mold and dust mites—and you only have to empty it every 60 days.
  • This robot vacuum is highly customizable and features patented technology that allows it to map the floor plan of your entire home, which means you can choose which rooms it cleans and when.
  • The machine can connect to your smart home with the iRobot Home app, Alexa or Google Assistant. How does “Roomba, clean my kitchen” sound to you?

The Draw

I love that he can map the house so that it doesn’t keep going in the wrong places. We have multiple different types of flooring in our home and it has not gotten stuck as of yet. It has even found its way out from under our couch which none of the cheaper models have ever been able to do.

I wish that the bag for the emptying station was larger, but all in all, I love it.

The Best Cordless Vacuum

Grey and green Bissell AirRam cordless stick vacuum - best cordless vacuum cleaner

Bissell AirRam Cordless Stick Vacuum536 Reviews$248.97Shop Now

If you have a lot of stairs, a crowded space or simply want to go easy on your back, consider a cordless option. These lightweight models are easy to maneuver around your house but can sometimes lack the same pep as standard upright models. Bissell’s AirRam is a winner because it weighs in at less than eight pounds, runs cordlessly and has a handle that drops flat so you can reach under couches and beds—which all comes without sacrificing suction. Several reviewers note that it packs a surprising amount of power considering its slender style, and in some cases, even more than built-in systems.

  • The Bissell AirRam is super lightweight, which makes it a go-to for cleaning quick messes (or even getting the kiddos to help out).
  • The swivel steering and flat handle help you to maneuver around most furniture and even vacuum those hard-to-reach spots under couches and dressers.
  • The professional-grade battery is long-lasting and you’ll always know when it needs to be charged thanks to a light that indicates power level. Run time is about 40 minutes.
  • Bright LED lights at the front of the cordless vacuum make it easy to see dirt and dust so you won’t miss spots.

The Draw

This AirRam cordless vacuum is SO easy to use, clean and wash and the battery seems to last for HOURS. Such great suction and ease of movement. I was surprised how much dirt and lint it pulled out of my carpet.

–Catherine, originally posted on bissell.comThe Downside

Because of the shape and the fact that this is not a regular vacuum cleaner with hoses and attachments, you are not able to vacuum in those narrow areas. The one size means around toilet, couch corners, benches, etc. you will have to find another means to vacuum up the dirt.

The Best Handheld Vacuum

Black, grey and white Shark Pet Perfect II cordless hand vacuum - best handheld vacuum

Shark Pet Perfect II Cordless Hand Vacuum750 Reviews$59.98View Details

When it comes to a handheld vacuum that won’t compromise suction for portability, the Shark Pet Perfect II Cordless Hand Vacuum is your best bet. It’s lightweight and super affordable, plus it will pick up anything in its path, from stray cereal to spilled flour. We love the variety of included attachments: Use the motorized pet brush for pesky cat and dog hair, the dusting brush for fine particles on hard surfaces like baseboards and the crevice tool for reaching into narrow spaces. Just remember to avoid storing the Shark on its charging station unless the battery has fully run out. That way, you’ll ensure the rechargeable 18-volt batteries have a long, powerful life.

  • The Shark Pet Perfect II is a powerful handheld vacuum that’s suitable for every surface—from tile to upholstery—in your home and vehicle.
  • Forget blisters: The rubberized handgrip makes it comfortable to hold.
  • It comes with a crevice tool and dusting brush attachment, as well as a motorized pet brush attachment that even sucks up pet hair that’s embedded in your carpet or couch.
  • LED lights indicate when it’s time to place the Shark in its wall-mounted charging stand.

The Draw

I can get dust bunnies that I couldn’t get using the hose on my upright vacuum. The rolling brush attachment picks up pet hair from rugs and upholstery like a dream.

–Grasshopper75, originally posted on WalmartThe Downside

Charge it overnight before using for the first time and do NOT put it back on the charger unless the battery is dead. It only runs about 15 minutes before dying which is about 3 days to chase dust bunnies. I set it down next to the charger until it won’t run, then it goes into the charger.

The Best Vacuum for Hardwood Floors

Blue and silver upright Dyson V11 Absolute cordless hardwood floor vacuum cleaner - best vacuum for hardwood floors

Dyson V11 Absolute Cordless Vacuum119 Reviews$899.98Shop Now

We would way rather vacuum hardwood floors than sweep them (real talk: who has the patience to fiddle with a dustpan?) but finding a machine that’s up to the task can be tricky. Many tend to merely kick up dust, scratch floors or be too noisy for an echo-y surface. That’s why, though it’s a splurge, we love Dyson’s V11 Absolute. The cordless model comes with a soft roller head that’s packed with carbon fibre filaments to grab fine particles, and it’s designed to absorb vibrations to help keep things quiet. Of course, the price tag is hefty, which means you can expect bells and whistles like real-time reporting on an LCD screen and a sleek dock.

  • Calling all tech lovers: The Dyson V11 Absolute has an LCD screen that keeps you in the loop with your remaining run time (up to 60 minutes), selected power mode, filter maintenance reminders and blockage reports.
  • There are three cleaning modes: Auto (to move between carpet and hard floors), Boost (for those extra dirty areas) and Eco (if you have a large area to clean and don’t want to recharge halfway through).
  • The soft roller head is perfect for gently removing debris and fine dust from hardwood floors without leaving marks.
  • The filtration system captures 99.7 per cent of all dust particles. Buh-bye, allergies!

The Draw

The vacuum heads are smooth and soft and do not leave a mark on hardwood floors, which is a problem I had with my previous vacuum.

–Tina717, originally posted on dysoncanada.caThe Downside

The head is relatively narrow, so you have to make more passes. There is no button lock, so it can get tiring to hold down the power trigger when using over large areas.

The Best Vacuum for Carpet

Red and silver upright Dirt Devil Endura Max vacuum cleaner - best vacuum cleaner for carpets

Dirt Devil Endura Max Upright Vacuum218 Reviews$149.98Shop Now

Is your house covered in carpet? You’ll want a traditional upright vacuum with mega suction and a large cannister to hold all that debris. Dirt Devil’s Endura Max delivers on both, with an eight-amp motor (anything about 12 is too powerful for standard outlets) and a two-litre dirt cup. You can adjust to four different heights to suit different carpet depths around your home. This machine scores extra points for its quick-release wand that can be stretched out to 10 feet, making it perfect for cobwebs in ceiling corners or along the tops of window frames.

  • A classic upright vacuum, the Dirt Devil Endura Max has the strong suction that’s often missing in smaller models, which makes it perfect for thick carpets.
  • Four different height settings let you adjust between flooring, low- and high-pile carpets.
  • Tackle cobwebs on the ceiling with an extension hose and wand that allow you to reach an extra 10 feet. There’s also a crevice tool for cleaning narrow spaces.
  • The extra-large dirt cannister empties with the single touch of a button—no struggle or mess!

The Draw

You’ll be disgusted by what this amazing vacuum pulls out of your carpet and rugs. I thought I had a decent vacuum but I just bought this and, wow, my stomach turned when I emptied the container and saw all the yuck it pulled out.

–MJR4, originally posted on The Downside

If you’re looking for a super light or quiet vacuum, just know that this is a sturdy model and makes a fair amount of noise.

The Best Vacuum for Pet Hair

Black, silver and green Bissell PowerGroom Swivel Rewind Pet upright vacuum cleaner - best vacuum cleaner for pet hair

Bissell PowerGroom Swivel Rewind Pet529 Reviews$118.88Shop Now

Picking up pet hair is one of the biggest challenges for a vacuum cleaner, but the Bissell PowerGroom was designed specifically for the task. The eight-amp motor serves up tons of power, the filter is washable so you don’t have to buy new ones constantly, and it can switch to a handheld mode with specialized attachments that are designed to grab dog and cat hair. The machine also promises longevity through engineering that keeps dirt out of the motor. The only downer? This heavy-duty device is, well, heavy (though its swivel head adds a bit of ease as you push it around).

  • The Bissell PowerGroom Swivel Rewind Pet was created specifically for pet owners and includes attachments like a flexible crevice tool (to catch dog hair stuck next to the fridge) and a mini brush called the Pet TurboEraser Tool that tidies hair-covered upholstery.
  • The specialized brushroll was designed to suck up debris with just one pass to help save you time.
  • Its multi-cyclonic suction ensures dirt stays in the tank and doesn’t get caught in the filters or motor.
  • When you’re all done, press the automatic cord rewind button and pack the vac away in seconds.

The Draw

On my first use of this Bissell, the container became nearly full after vacuuming just half of my bedroom alone!! I couldn’t believe how much dirt my other vacuum was leaving behind, even beyond the dog hair!

I wish the cord was longer.

The Best Inexpensive Vacuum

Blue and black Bissell 3-in-1 stick vacuum cleaner - best inexpensive vacuum cleaner

Bissell 3-in-1 Lightweight Stick Vacuum with QuickRelease Handle277 Reviews$24.88Shop Now

This budget-friendly find is perfect for small spaces. It weighs just over three pounds and fits easily in a small closet. Adding even more value for the low price, it also converts to handheld mode that can be used on furniture and stairs. It works best on floors or low-pile carpets—consider it an easy alternative to sweeping. However, with only two amps of power, this model won’t hold up against thick carpets loaded with pet hair.

  • If you’re looking for a cheap option, the Bissell 3-in-1 is your very best bet because it’s lightweight and powerful. And did we mention it’s under 30 bucks?
  • It quickly converts into a hand vacuum for dirty countertops and upholstery, or you can simply press the QuickRelease button to shorten the handle (but keep the foot attached) for stairs.
  • The bagless canister means easy clean-up and you won’t have to purchase refills.
  • It comes in three colour options to suit your home’s décor: titanium blue, mint and purple. Finally, a vacuum we don’t mind leaving out!

The Draw

My floors are mostly laminate, with carpet in the bedroom. After I used the vacuum for the first time, I was really impressed by how much dirt it took up (yuck). Really exceeded my expectations, especially given the low price.

–Peter from NL, Walmart customerThe Downside

The vacuum is not great at picking up cat hair on carpets or furniture.
