The diesel Hyundai Venue is claimed to return 23.4kmpl.

4. Tata Nexon

It is available with two engine options – 120bhp, 1.2-litre turbo petrol and 108bhp, 1.5-litre turbo diesel.  The torque figure of the gasoline unit and oil burner stands at 170Nm and 260Nm respectively. Power is transmitted to the front wheels via a 6-speed manual gearbox or AMT unit. The SUV is claimed to return an ARAI certified fuel efficiency of 17kmpl and 21.5kmpl in petrol and diesel, respectively. The sub-compact SUV comes with several first-in-segment features including multi drive modes, a floating dashtop screen and the ‘Grand Central Console’.

5. Ford EcoSport

The American carmaker introduced the first mid-life facelift of the SUV with compressive updates in late 2017. The new EcoSport marked debut of the company’s all-new 1.5-litre, three-cylinder Ti-VCT petrol engine along with the tried and tested 1.5-litre TDCi diesel powertrain. The new 1.5L petrol unit makes power worth 121.3bhp against 150Nm of torque and the oil burner delivers a top power of 99bhp with 205Nm of torque. The new model is available with 2 engine options – a 1.2-litre, turbocharged petrol and a 1.5-litre turbocharged diesel. While the former is good for 109bhp and 200Nm of torque, the oil burner produces 115bhp and 300Nm of torque. Transmission options include a 6-speed manual and an AMT unit. The petrol model is claimed to return a certified fuel economy of 17kmpl, while diesel is rated at 20kmpl.

7. Maruti Vitara Brezza

Joining our list of best mileage SUVs is the Maruti Vitara Brezza, which recently received the new petrol engine for the first time. The SUV is now available in petrol version only as the diesel model discontinued due to BSVI emission norms. The SUV is powered by a 1.5-litre K15B petrol engine that produces 104bhp of power and 138Nm of torque. Transmission choices include a 5-speed manual and a 4-speed torque convertor automatic. Interestingly, the Brezza AT is also available with mild-hybrid system. While the manual version is claimed to return 17.03kmpl, the petrol automatic delivers 18.76 lakh.

8. Hyundai Creta
