18 Great Compression Socks for men

Shock DoctorSHOCK DOCTOR

If you’ve yet to try exercising in a pair of compression socks, we’re here to convince you that it’s a good idea. You’ve probably seen many athletes rocking them while running, cycling, or skiing. And while they certainly look cool, they offer tons of benefits for workout performance and recovery. (Looking for some new compression shorts? Here are 20 of our favorite pairs.)

Here’s the basic theory: The tight fabric squeezes and supports your veins and helps your blood make the journey back to your heart, thus improving oxygen flow and speeding recovery. Not every scientific study shows measurable results, but many athletes, from weekend to warrior, report good results.

“When compression garments are worn during and after heavy exercise, they appear to reduce muscle soreness,” says Jessica Hill, M.S.c., a U.K.-based exercise scientist who authored a 2013 review on the topic, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine. (In the market for some new compression pants or compression leggings? We’ve got you covered there, too.)

Compression can also help with your performance during your workout.

Dr. Gerardo Miranda-Comas, a sports medicine physician and assistant professor at the Icahn School of Medicine, previously told Men’s Health, “It can help with biomechanics,” says Miranda-Comas, “and personally that’s why I recommend it at times. … Compression helps recruit muscle adequately and give you more synchronized movement.”

When it comes to picking a pair of compression socks, it helps to understand how compression strength is indicated. It’s measured in mmHg, or millimeters of mercury. Higher numbers mean more compression. (If you’re curious, the measurement derives from the amount of atmospheric pressure required to support a millimeter of mercury.) Many models are graduated, with more compression toward the bottom of the sock. Most socks for athletic use, like those below, are 15-22 mmHG or 20-30mmHG.
