2021 Ram TRX Blue Airborne Teaser

So, how do we know that? A lot of research and analysis, that’s how.

Each year J.D. Power asks verified owners of new pickup trucks about their experience with their vehicles. This data is compiled into the annual J.D. Power Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) Study, which measures vehicle owners’ feelings about how their vehicles perform in a wide variety of circumstances. From the consumer responses, J.D. Power computes an overall APEAL index score for each model, measured on a 1,000-point scale. The higher the truck’s index score, the better it is in terms of overall appeal.

Listed below, you will find the 11 highest-rated, most appealing 2021 truck models, as rated by their owners. The list includes all the truck categories, and the vehicles are listed in ascending order of owner appeal. That means you’ll find the most appealing pickup truck at the end of the list.

11. 2021 Honda Ridgeline –

2021 Honda RIdgeline Front Quarter View

The Honda Ridgeline is not your average pickup truck. In fact, with the exception of its truck bed and towing capabilities, it’s not like a conventional truck at all. Instead of traditional body-on-frame construction, it uses a unibody architecture along with a 4-wheel-independent suspension to deliver capable towing and hauling capacity. At the same time, it provides the comfort, ride, and handling of a crossover SUV.

Sold only as a 5-passenger crew-cab model, the 2021 Honda Ridgeline features revised styling to give it a bolder appearance. The Ridgeline’s only engine is a 280-horsepower 3.5-liter V6, and torque-vectoring all-wheel drive (AWD) is standard. The truck is available in Sport, RTL, RTL-E, and Black Edition trim levels, each equipped with the Ridgeline’s innovative locking in-bed trunk and dual-action tailgate.

The index score for the 2021 Honda Ridgeline is 826. The Ridgeline receives an appeal award from J.D. Power in the Midsize Pickup segment.  Local Deals & IncentivesIf you are in the market for a new car we can help you find local deals and the latest incentives from dealers in your area.Find Best Deals

2021 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro Front Quarter View

The Toyota Tundra is a full-size pickup truck that competes with the Ford F-150, Chevy Silverado 1500, and Ram 1500. It’s offered in two cab styles and with three different bed lengths, and yet its variations aren’t nearly as numerous as those of its key competitors.

As an example, the Tundra comes with a single engine: a 5.7-liter V8 that produces 381 horsepower. It’s matched to a 6-speed automatic transmission, and both rear-wheel-drive (RWD) and 4-wheel-drive (4WD) configurations are available. Toyota offers the Tundra in six trim levels for 2021: SR, SR5, Limited, TRD Pro, 1794 Edition, and Platinum.

This is the final year for the Tundra in its current form. A redesigned Tundra arrives for 2022.

The index score for the 2021 Toyota Tundra is 835.

Both RWD and 4WD are available across the lineups.

For 2021, the 2500HD is available in several special editions plus the Work Truck, Custom, LT, LTZ, and High Country trims. The 3500HD mimics those offerings and also provides the availability of dual rear wheels.

It is available in regular cab, extended cab (Double cab), and crew cab configurations with standard RWD and optional 4WD.

When it comes to powertrains, the choices are wide-ranging. You can get a turbocharged 4-cylinder, a V6, a turbo-diesel inline 6-cylinder, and a couple of V8s. Among the changes for the 2021 model year is a newly available Multi-Flex 6-function tailgate. The Silverado 1500 is offered in Work Truck, Custom, Custom Trail Boss, RST, LTZ, LT Trail Boss, and High Country trims.

The index score for the 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is 848.

7. 2021 Ford F Series Super Duty

2021 Ford F Series Super Duty Front Quarter View

The Ford F Series Super Duty line is the brand’s range of heavy-duty full-size pickups. Because the trucks in the Super Duty lineup are typically used for work, they supply commercial-oriented payload and towing capabilities. However, because they’re also used as personal vehicles, they increasingly offer modern technologies and convenience features.

The Ford Super Duty range includes F-250F-350, and F-450 models. They are available in XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum, and Limited trim levels. Two gasoline V8s and a turbodiesel are available, along with RWD or 4WD. Ford offers dual rear wheels on several of the Super Duty models.

The index score for the 2021 F Series Super Duty pickups is 852.

6. 2021 Ram 2500/3500 – Find the best Ram deals!

2021 Ram 3500 Heavy Duty Front Quarter View

The Ram 2500 and Ram 3500 are the heavy-duty full-size pickups from Stellantis, and they go head-to-head with similar trucks from Chevrolet, Ford, and GMC. Like other heavy-duty pickups, they are designed for commercial hauling and towing chores, but they are increasingly purchased by people who use them for personal use.

The Ram 2500 and 3500 are among the most refined and comfortable of the heavy-duties, equipped with either a coil-spring or air suspension. They are offered in regular cab, crew cab, and extended crew cab (Mega cab) models with a pair of bed lengths. Engines include a gasoline V8 and two turbodiesels. The Ram heavy-duty line has seven trim levels: Tradesman, Big Horn, Lone Star, Power Wagon, Laramie, Limited Longhorn, and Limited.

The index score for the Ram 2500 and Ram 3500 pickups is 863.

5. 2021 GMC Sierra HD – Find the best GMC deals!

2021 GMC Sierra 2500 Heavy Duty Front Quarter View

Another entrant in the heavy-duty pickup truck segment is the GMC Sierra HD. It’s a kissing cousin to the Chevy Silverado HD lineup and offers the same engine options including a 401-horsepower 6.6-liter gasoline V8 or 6.6-liter turbo-diesel V8 generating 445 horsepower. Rear-drive is the standard configuration with 4WD widely available.

For 2021 the GMC Sierra 2500HD and 3500HD are available in Sierra, SLE, SLT, AT4, and Denali trims. The AT4 and Denali are offered in crew cab styles only, and an X31 off-road package is available on SLE and SLT trims.

The index score for the GMC Sierra 2500HD and 3500HD is 865. The Sierra HD receives an appeal award from J.D. Power in the Large Heavy-Duty Pickup Truck segment.

4. 2021 Ford F-150 – Find the best Ford deals!

2021 Ford F-150 Front Quarter View

Completely redesigned for the 2021 model year, the Ford F-150 has been the single bestselling vehicle in America for more than four decades. Its key competitors are the Chevy Silverado 1500 and Ram 1500.

Beyond the new exterior styling, the most obvious design change in the F-150 is the available 12-inch infotainment touchscreen display and an accompanying 12-inch digital instrumentation screen. Both come standard on many of the truck’s upper trim levels.

The F-150 offers a choice between multiple engines, including a gas V6, turbo-diesel V6, two different twin-turbocharged gas V6s, and a traditional V8. For the first time, you can even get a hybrid version of this truck. Naturally, the F-150 comes with RWD or 4WD, and in regular cab, SuperCab, and SuperCrew body styles. Trim levels include XL, XLT, Lariat, Tremor, King Ranch, Platinum, Raptor, and Limited.

The index score for the 2021 Ford F-150 is 872.

3. 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 – Find the best GMC deals!

2021 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali Front Quarter View

Mechanically, the GMC Sierra 1500 is very similar to the Chevrolet Silverado 1500, but the two truck lines from General Motors offer different exterior and interior styling. A GMC differentiator is the upscale Denali trim that is one of the most luxurious of the full-size light-duty pickups.

The Sierra 1500 is offered in Base, SLE, Elevation, SLT, AT4, and Denali trims. The AT4 is the dedicated off-roader in the bunch, although 4WD is available across the lineup. Additions for the 2021 model year include wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto. The acclaimed MultiPro tailgate has become standard on SLE and Elevation trims.

The index score for the 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 is 877, in a tie with the 2021 Nissan Titan.

2. 2021 Nissan Titan – Find the best Nissan deals!

2021 Nissan Titan

The Nissan Titan is a full-size light-duty pickup truck that competes with the Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Ford F-150, Ram 1500, and the Toyota Tundra. One of its key differentiators is the fact that it offers the most standard horsepower of any pickup in its class. The 400-horsepower 5.6-liter V8 is the only engine offered in the Titan.

Rear-drive is the standard configuration with 4WD an option. The Titan XD is the version to get if you need beefy towing and hauling capabilities. An off-road-oriented trim — PRO-4X — equips the Titan with hill descent control and an available electronic-locking rear differential. In addition to the PRO-4X, the Titan is available in S, SV, SL, and Platinum Reserve trim levels.

The index score for the 2021 Nissan Titan is 877, in a tie with the GMC Sierra 1500.

2021 Ram 1500 – Find the best Ram deals!

2021 Ram TRX Front Quarter View

The Ram 1500 is the Stellantis entry in the wildly popular light-duty full-size pickup truck segment. Two different versions are on sale. The Ram Classic is the old, previous-generation model that serves as an affordable way for buyers to get into a new full-size light-duty truck. The Ram 1500 is the newer design, now a few years old but evidently no less appealing.

And, for the 2021 model year, the Ram 1500 lineup adds the new TRX off-road performance truck with a supercharged V8 generating more than 700 horsepower. Most Ram buyers, however, choose one of the truck’s mild hybrid powertrains in V6 and V8 format, or the conventional V8 or turbo-diesel V6.

For the 2021 model year, in addition to the Ram TRX, the Ram 1500 comes in Tradesman, HFE, Big Horn, Lone Star, Laramie, Rebel, Limited Longhorn, and Limited trim. It is available as a Quad Cab or a crew cab with two bed lengths. Both RWD and 4WD versions are available.

Honda Ridgeline

2021 honda ridgeline front

HONDA

The only Honda with a cargo bed—the 2021 Ridgeline—is a one-size-fits-all alternative to traditional pickup trucks. While the Ridgeline lineup doesn’t include an off-road-ready model or an optional diesel engine, it does have a standard crew cab that’s roomier and more comfortable than any of its competitors’. Its minivan-based underpinnings and V-6 powertrain don’t allow it to tow more than 5000 pounds, but they do enable the Ridgeline to accelerate quickly, consume fuel efficiently, provide a competitive payload rating, and drive with unrivaled agility and refinement. Its host of standard driver assists and innovative features—including an in-bed trunk and a multifunction tailgate—further bolster the 2021 Ridgeline’s status as the truck equivalent of a Swiss Army knife.

REVIEW, PRICING, AND SPECSChevy Colorado

2021 chevrolet colorado front

CHEVROLET

The mid-size 2021 Chevy Colorado pickup and its corporate sibling, the GMC Canyon, provide everyday practicality and broad capabilities, with considerable towing and payload ratings. Plus, they are much easier to maneuver than their full-size offspring. The Colorado boasts three different engines, including a surprisingly quick V-6 and a stump-pulling diesel four-cylinder. While the interior is overrun with cheap plastics, and even the biggest cab size has a small back seat, the truck maintains a pleasant driving position and athletic handling. Chevy ensures every model has a modern infotainment system, but it leaves many contemporary driver-assistance features off the roster. The 2021 Colorado has a good enough resume to suit many pickup shoppers, but it lacks the qualifications to interest a wider audience.

2021 gmc canyon at4

GMC

The 2021 GMC Canyon is essentially the more glamorous version of the Chevy Colorado, even though they’re largely identical underneath the surface. While these mid-size pickup trucks are hugely popular, they’re now facing greater competition from alternatives such as the Ford Ranger and Jeep Gladiator. Unlike every other truck in this class, GMC markets its mid-sizer as a premium pickup, even though its top-of-the-line Denali model fails to meet that expectation. Still, the Canyon can be covered in chrome and fitted with fancy features, such as heated and cooled seats. It’s also available with a trio of engines that include a strong V-6 and a torque-rich diesel four-cylinder. As with the Colorado, the Canyon offers a surprisingly refined ride and athletic handling for truck that’s not based on a crossover. This allows it to best imitate full-size pickups—such as the GMC Sierra 1500—by way of its tremendous towing and hauling capabilities.

REVIEW, PRICING, AND SPECSJeep Gladiator

2021 jeep gladiator rubicon font

JEEP

Jeep hasn’t offered a model with a cargo bed since the early ’90s, but the 2021 Gladiator finally gives the brand’s fans a cool and useful tool. The mid-size pickup truck is basically a more versatile version of the popular Jeep Wrangler. It tows more (up to 7760 pounds versus 3500) than its SUV counterpart, and its longer wheelbase helps it ride better, too. Still, the truck requires regular steering inputs when cruising on the highway to keep it from straying, and it’s not as easy to maneuver on the trails as the smaller Wrangler. Along with a strong V-6 and a standard stick-shift transmission, the Gladiator offers a torquey diesel engine option with 442 lb-ft. While the 2021 Gladiator can get pricey in a hurry, its removable body panels and rugged persona make it one of the best pickups around.

2021 ram 1500 front

RAM

The 2021 Ram 1500 isn’t the best pickup truck because it has the most “best-in-class” accolades but because it raises expectations for the entire breed. Pickups were once judged based on ruggedness rather than refinement. No longer. And this latest Ram, with its luxury-grade interior and cushy ride quality, easily exceeds even the fanciest versions of the Chevy Silverado 1500GMC Sierra 1500, and Ford F-150. Its innovative air suspension, built-in cargo-bed bins, split-folding tailgate, and giant 12.0-inch touchscreen are all options not offered on its rivals. Along with a frugal and torque-rich diesel six-cylinder engine, the Ram enhances its standard V-6 and optional Hemi V-8 with hybrid systems. They contribute to the pickup’s contemporary vibe, which is also bolstered by its extensive technology and myriad capabilities—which makes the Ram an easy pick for our 2021 10Best list.

2021 ram 1500 trx

FCA

The battle for the best high-performance pickup truck just got interesting now that the 702-horsepower Ram 1500 TRX has entered the arena. The Hellcat-powered half-ton has the Ford F-150 Raptor squarely in its sights, but until its Blue Oval rival adds more power and steps up its interior game, the Ram rules. Rivalry aside, the TRX is an impressive and intimidating machine, and one that we named to our 2021 10Best list. Its body is 8 inches wider than the regular Ram 1500, and its off-road capabilities have been transformed. This is thanks to a stronger frame, an even more sophisticated suspension, and myriad other enhanced characteristics. The 2021 Ram 1500 TRX is also loaded with a seriously luxurious interior and packed with all the latest technology. The only question left is whether the TRX can fly higher over the jumps than the now seemingly obsolete Raptor.

2021 ford f 150 hybrid lariat front

ANDI HEDRICKCAR AND DRIVER

Ford offers the 2021 F-150 with no fewer than six powertrains—including a hybrid for the first time—plus three cab configurations and both long and short bed lengths. Need something to impress the in-laws? Upscale models offer more than just a touch of luxury. Towing something heavy? We expect some of these half-ton trucks will boast a maximum towing capacity of up to 14,000 pounds. An off-road focused Tremor model is available as well and don’t forget the bad-boy F-150 Raptor (reviewed separately), Ford’s performance powerhouse.

FORD

The 2021 Ford F-150 Raptor aims to fly higher, pound across the desert faster, and look meaner than its predecessor. This all-new, third-generation Raptor remains a bulkier body double of the regular F-150, which means they share technology and several innovative features. However, Ford’s high-performance pickup truck is also fitted with impressive off-road equipment, such as a sophisticated long-travel suspension and available 37-inch all-terrain tires. Assisting the Raptor’s powerful twin-turbo V-6 is a paddle-shifted 10-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive. Though its engine should produce at least 450 horsepower, that’s still relatively wimpy compared with the 702-hp Hellcat V-8 in the Ram 1500 TRX. That’s why Ford is developing an even more ferocious Raptor R that should mark the return of a raucous V-8 engine that earns it entry into the 700-hp club.

2021 ford super duty front

FORD

Heavy-duty trucks are more powerful and capable than ever, and the 2021 Ford Super Duty is one of the most powerful. Its Power Stroke diesel engine develops 1050 lb-ft of torque, and the mightiest model can tow 37,000 pounds. Both those stats are slightly behind the 2021 Ram HD but ahead of heavy-duty versions of the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra. While those credentials are great for advertisements, the Super Duty succeeds most at being a versatile truck that can be configured as a stripped-down workhouse or a seriously luxurious towing machine and everything in between. Along with the diesel engine option, there’s the standard 6.2-liter gasoline V-8 that makes 430 lb-ft of torque or an optional 7.3-liter gas V-8 that cranks out 475 lb-ft. All of that capability, plus its myriad modern technologies and apartment-sized crew cab, makes it easy to look past its cheap cabin pieces and clumsy highway habits.

2021 ram 3500 front

RAM

In the chess game that is best-in-class ratings, the 2021 Ram 2500 and 3500 rise above rival heavy-duty trucks with their unmatched ride quality and luxury options. The largest Rams boast massive max towing and engine-torque figures—they can pull up to 37,100 pounds, and their Cummins diesel makes up to 1075 lb-ft of torque. Plus, neither the Ford nor the heavy-duty Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra ride as smoothly or are as elegant as the fanciest Rams. That’s because the Rams’ plushest interiors are quiet and covered in rich materials. There’s also no shortage of high-tech options, with myriad driver assists and a huge 12.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Yes, the 2021 Ram 2500 and 3500 are hugely capable and more luxurious than any other HD pickup truck

Ford Ranger pickup review

Best Pickup: Ford Ranger

Carbuyer rating

4 out of 5Read Full ReviewWatch Video

Not too long ago, most pickup trucks felt agricultural and they weren’t particularly safe or comfortable. The Ford Ranger, which is regularly updated, successfully addresses all three criticisms, as it’s a genuinely good alternative to an SUV. Buyers also considering an SUV will undoubtedly be drawn to the Wildtrak model, which is offered in bright metallic colours with body coloured bumpers and an interior that has more equipment and technology than many SUVs. There are models to suit everyone, however, and business customers may be drawn to the entry-level XL with its no-nonsense spec list.

If you’re going to be transporting family around, then the Ranger could be worth considering, as it’s one of the only pickups to be awarded the full five-star Euro NCAP safety rating. All models get four-wheel drive and special off-road-biased driver assistance systems to help you out when the going gets tough. You get a choice of two engines (both diesels) and three body styles, of which we’d recommend the less powerful 168bhp 2.0-litre diesel and double-cab body. This engine is the smoother and cheaper to run of the two engines, while the double cab offers more interior space than the other two options. In this spec, you get a load bay that can carry nearly 1,200kg plus a towing capacity of up to 3,500kg.

The Ranger won our Best Pickup award for 2022 in our annual Carbuyer Best Car Awards, for the third year in a row.

Nissan Navara pickup

Nissan Navara Best Buy cutout

Carbuyer rating

3.8 out of 5Read Full Review

Nissan has been building rugged pickups for years, but this most recent Navara is the most road-biased and comfort-orientated one yet. The double-cab version – which we recommend – comes with sophisticated rear suspension that makes it surprisingly comfortable on road and one of the best-to-drive pickups available. This doesn’t diminish its off-road abilities, however, while the cabin will be familiar to anyone who’s sampled the latest Nissan Qashqai and Nissan X-Trail family cars.

There is just one engine available in the Navara, but with two outputs. The 2.3-litre diesel is available with 158bhp on lower spec models, while top-spec versions come with a more powerful 187bhp twin-turbocharged version. Not only does it allow you to tow up to 3,500kg, but it’s also pretty refined, too.

There are five trim levels but the more basic Visia and Acenta models feel sparsely equipped. We’d recommend going for at least the mid-range N-Connecta with the more powerful engine, 18-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone climate control, side steps and power-folding door mirrors. It also gets an upgraded eight-inch infotainment touchscreen, sat nav, a reversing camera, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The majority of buyers will probably go for the top-spec Tekna and N-Guard trims with its Around View Monitor camera, rear parking sensors, heated leather interior and LED headlamps.

Toyota Hilux pickup review

Toyota Hilux

Carbuyer rating

3.7 out of 5Read Full Review

An icon of toughness, dependability and reliability, the Toyota Hilux has a fantastic reputation for keeping going, no matter the situation. To succeed in the UK, however, it needs to work as a family car as well as a rough, tough pickup. It’s reasonably comfortable and refined compared to its rivals, while the interior feels pretty well put together, too, with plenty of space – as long as you go for the double-cab version.

Lower specs get a 148bhp 2.4-litre four-cylinder diesel, which is powerful enough (although not quite as strong as some rivals), while a facelift in 2020 introduced a 201bhp 2.8-litre engine for high-spec models. Expect around 30mpg from both engines. A maximum towing limit of 3,200kg puts the Hilux in the middle of the class, while the load bay can carry over a tonne itself.

There are four trim levels to choose from, and while the Icon is around £2,500 more than the entry-level Active, it does mean you get a double-cab bodystyle plus extras like a reversing camera, cruise control, tinted rear windows and Toyota’s Touch 2 touchscreen infotainment system.

The Toyota Hilux scooped our first Best Used Pickup Award for 2022.

Volkswagen Amarok pickup

Carbuyer rating

3.5 out of 5Read Full ReviewWatch Video

This is certainly one of the plushest pickups on sale right now, with the high-quality interior fit and finish you expect to find in a Volkswagen. The Amarok is fitted with a 3.0-litre V6 diesel, with 201 or 255bhp. All models come with selectable four-wheel drive as standard and if you choose an automatic gearbox, the Amarok is capable of towing up to 3,500kg. The 2.5 square-metre load bay can carry over a tonne and is wide enough to take a forklift pallet.

Two main trim levels are offered, called Trendline and Highline; if you’re after a luxurious pickup truck, the Highline Amarok should be at the top of your list, with equipment such as leather upholstery and heated seats, 19-inch alloy wheels, front and rear parking sensors and chrome detailing.

Isuzu D-Max pickup review

2021 Isuzu D-Max off-road

Carbuyer rating

3.4 out of 5Read Full Review

This model comes from the more utilitarian end of the pickup spectrum than some of the others in this list. There’s only one engine to choose from – a 163bhp 1.9-litre diesel that’s good for a towing limit of 3,500kg and carrying just over a tonne in the load bay. Both the automatic and manual gearboxes have high and low ratios to improve the Isuzu D-MAX’s performance off-road.

The truck pulls strongly, but sounds a little rougher than some rivals, while its suspension is less comfortable on-road than some of its rivals, too. However, all models are just about unstoppable off-road and most are pretty cheap to buy in the first place, too, which will make them more appealing to buyers planning to use them for work. Isuzu has cottoned on to buyers wanting a beefy-looking truck, as the D-Max is now available in a rugged-looking XTR spec.

SsangYong Musso pickup review

SsangYong Musso facelift off-road

Carbuyer rating

3 out of 5Read Full Review

The latest SsangYong Musso is heavily based on the SsangYong Rexton SUV, so it’s pretty well equipped and luxuriously appointed inside. The driving experience is still quite old-school however – there’s no doubting this is a commercial vehicle at heart, and it’s far from being the most fuel-efficient model in the class.

It is good value to buy, though, as well as being powered by a 179bhp diesel engine, boasting impressive towing capacity of 3,500kg and coming with a market-leading seven-year/150,000-mile warranty. A new Rhino LWB model gives you an even longer bed (1.61 metres), which allows a standard pallet to be transported – a rare feat for double-cab trucks.

Ford Ranger Raptor pickup

Carbuyer rating

3.4 out of 5

The Ford Ranger Raptor is unlike any other pickup on this list. It’s not built for load carrying – in fact, its thoroughly upgraded suspension means it has a lower payload than the standard Ranger. As a result, business owners can’t claim VAT back (a big draw of pickups), while it’s expensive to buy and won’t be cheap to run either. But if you’re taken by the Raptor, these drawbacks won’t matter a bit.

The top-spec Ranger is made for driving off-road at high speed, highlighted by its ‘Baja’ driving mode inspired by one of the world’s toughest 4×4 events. It stands much higher than the standard pickup, and few cars offer the same presence.

While a similar pickup sold in the United States would probably come with a huge V8 petrol engine, the Ranger Raptor makes do with a 210bhp 2.0-litre diesel engine. It has a lot of pulling power but is far from the quickest vehicle around, which might surprise you given its looks. At least it costs roughly the same to run as a normal Ranger.
