best handy smartphone

Smartphones are getting bigger and bigger. So many devices today — especially flagships — are more than 150mm tall, or nearly six inches. The Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra, for example, is 166.9mm tall (~6.5 inches), which is huge. There actually are a few of the Best Handy Smartphone models out there, but you might need to make some sacrifices. For example, smaller devices might have poor battery life and weaker specs as compared to their larger counterparts. But if a small form factor is important to you, the mini smartphones below are your best bets!

While many people like big smartphones, phones that large have their share of problems. For example, they are not easy to use with one hand and are harder to carry around in one’s pocket.

Some consumers still prefer small Android phones, and by “small” we mean devices that are less than or equal to 145mm (~5.7 inches) tall. But are there any options left?

1. Samsung Galaxy S10e

As far as small Android phones go, you can’t do much better than the Samsung Galaxy S10e. Even though it is small in size with a height of just 142.2mm, it still packs many high-end features — and has a reasonable price tag to boot.

With the Galaxy S10e, you are getting the same high-end processor you’ll find in the main Galaxy S10 and even the Galaxy S10 Plus (the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 or Exynos 9820, depending on your region). You also get the Android 9 Pie (upgradeable to Android 10), up to 8GB of RAM, and up to 256GB of internal storage.

The Galaxy S10e has a comparatively small battery at just 3,100mAh, and its camera system is nowhere near as good as the systems on its larger siblings. Regardless, it’s a great device that is still considered a small Android phone.CHECK PRICING

2. Google Pixel 3

Pixel 3 XL hands on

We’ll admit that with a height of 145.6mm, the Google Pixel 3 just barely crosses our self-imposed limit for small Android phones. However, if you’re looking for a phone that won’t feel gigantic in your hand but still offers a lot of power, this is certainly worth a look.

The Pixel 3 comes with 2018’s top-of-the-line processor, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845. It comes with a near-stock version of Android 9 Pie (upgradeable to Android 10), 4GB of RAM, and up to 128GB of storage. However, the highlight of the Pixel 3 is its camera, which is still among the best ever made. What’s more, the camera software is constantly getting tweaked by Google, which makes the Pixel 3 a solid investment if consistent Android and feature updates are important to you.

Keep in mind that the Pixel 4 has already been announced, but the handset is slightly larger than its predecessor, coming in at 147.1mm.CHECK PRICING

3. Palm Phone

Palm Phone - Small Android phones.

The Palm Phone is not just one of the small Android phones you can buy today — it is downright tiny. With a height of just 96.6mm, the device is barely larger than a credit card.

Originally, the Palm Phone was sold as a companion device exclusively through Verizon. It was meant to be used as a device you would take with you when having your primary phone wasn’t practical. You would need a “regular” phone attached to a Verizon account to get it.

Now you can buy the Palm Phone from Verizon on its own and use it as your primary device. You can even get the unlocked version from Palm’s website and then activate it on the carrier of choice. The main drawback to the Palm Phone is that it’s not very powerful and would probably be frustrating to use as your only smartphone. However, this list wouldn’t be complete without it, and it looks pretty darn cool! The Palm Phone is definitely a conversation starter.CHECK PRICING

5. Unihertz Atom

Unihertz Atom - Small Android phones.

The Unihertz Atom is the smallest phone on this list, and it could very well be the tiniest Android phone around. This little guy measures a mere 96mm in height, which is slightly shorter than the Palm Phone. The Unihertz Atom is thicker and heavier at 18mm and 108g, though.

Regardless, this is a fun small Android phone bound to start many a conversation. Specs are not really impressive, but in our tests we found it to be an alright phone for casual users who don’t demand much from a phone. The tiny screen makes it harder to type and watch media on, but people who use this phone probably don’t want to do much of that.

Keep in mind that Unihertz has already announced the Atom’s successor, but you can’t get your hands on it just yet. You can, however, pre-order it via the company’s Kickstarter campaign. It’s called the Unihertz Atom XL and is still a small phone despite its name, with a height of just 134.5mm.CHECK PRICING
