Best Huawei Phone 2019

1. Huawei P40 Pro and Pro Plus

Huawei P40 Pro Home screen stock settings

The latest Huawei flagship doesn’t have Google Mobile Services, but it still brings quite a few impressive hardware features to the table.

Huawei’s devices have a reputation for great cameras and the P40 Pro and Pro Plus seem to deliver here. You’ve got a 50MP main camera with big pixels and the firm’s RYYB color filters for improved low-light performance. And these filters also find their way to the zoom cameras, promising better zoomed-in shots at night. You’ve got a 5x periscope camera on the standard P40 Pro, and two zoom sensors on the Plus model (3x and 10x).

Otherwise, the other major addition this year is a 90Hz OLED screen for both models. This should deliver smoother animations and gaming in supported content. Other notable features include 5G capabilities, a 4,200mAh battery with 40W charging (and 40W wireless charging for the Pro Plus), and IP68 designs.CHECK PRICING

2. Huawei Mate XS

Much like the P40 series, the Huawei Mate XS doesn’t have Google Mobile Services either, but it marks the first Huawei foldable to be released in the West.

Huawei’s latest foldable is a mild upgrade over the Mate X, delivering a Kirin 990 chipset instead of the Kirin 980 seen in the P30 series and Mate 20 family. Otherwise, you’re still getting 8GB of RAM, 512GB of expandable storage, and a 4,500mAh battery with 55W charging.

The Mate XS also delivers a triple camera setup, featuring a 40MP main camera, 16MP ultra-wide shooter, and a 3x telephoto sensor. And the foldable design means these cameras can also be used for selfies, with the rear screen being used as a mirror of sorts.CHECK PRICING

3. Huawei P30 series

Huawei P30 Pro back standing up (37 of 60)

Like the idea of the P40 Pro but need full Google support? Then the Huawei P30 Pro should be up your alley. Huawei’s early 2019 flagship doesn’t have the latest chipset or a high refresh rate screen, but it’s still got loads of features.

Much like the new devices, the P30 Pro has a 4,200mAh battery with 40W wired charging and 27W wireless topups. So it should last for a long time and charge in no time. We also get an IP68 design, reverse wireless charging, and an in-display fingerprint sensor.

The P30 Pro stood out back in 2019 thanks to its low-light performance, and you can still expect some great shots now when the sun goes down. It also excels at zoom, delivering a 5x periscope camera that tops out at 10x hybrid zoom (and 50x digital).

Huawei’s standard P30 is worth a look too, featuring a versatile triple rear camera setup, headphone port, OLED screen with in-display fingerprint sensor, and the Kirin 980 chipset. You aren’t getting 40W charging, wireless charging, IP68 resistance, or a periscope camera, but it’s a good deal at under $500 on Amazon right now. Furthermore, the company has also launched the P30 Pro New Edition in 2020, being slightly cheaper than the original P30 Pro’s launch price but mostly identical otherwise.CHECK PRICING

4. Huawei Mate 30 Pro

The Huawei Mate 30 Pro is the latest mainline entry in the Mate series, but it unfortunately lacks Google Play Services integration too. This means you’ll need to rely on web apps and sketchy methods to get your Google fix.

If you can look past the Google issues (a big “if”), you’ll find a divisive waterfall display, handy 3D face unlock, and a big 4,500mAh battery. Huawei’s 40W charging solution is still present here, but is now joined by a 27W wireless solution.

The Mate 30 Pro doesn’t have the P30 Pro or P40 Pro’s periscope camera, delivering a 3x 8MP telephoto sensor instead. But the rest of the rear cameras are pretty impressive nonetheless, featuring a 40MP main camera with RYYB sensor and a 40MP ultra-wide camera. In fact, the latter sensor is slightly bigger than the main camera sensor, and Huawei is claiming some impressive low-light performance.

We reiterate the lack of Google support once again, meaning no Gmail app, Google Search app, Assistant, Play Store, and some third-party apps. So we’d only recommend buying this if you know what you’re getting into.CHECK PRICING

  • Cameras: 40, 40, and 8MP + 3D ToF

  • Software: Android 10

5. Huawei Mate 20X 5G

Looking for a 5G Huawei phone? Well, the P40 and Mate 30 series both sport 5G versions, but only the Mate 20 family has a 5G option with Google Play Services. Yes, the Mate 20X 5G was one of the first 5G phones on the market.EDITOR’S PICK

One of the biggest reasons to get the phone (literally) has to be the 7.2-inch OLED screen, making it ideal for multimedia and gaming. Otherwise, this is essentially the Mate 20 Pro with a big screen, no IP rating, no wireless charging, and no 3D face unlock.

The Mate 20X 5G even has the Mate 20 Pro’s triple rear camera (40MP+20MP+8MP), selfie camera, 4,200mAh battery, and 40W charging. However, it has one advantage over the Mate 20 Pro, packing a 3.5mm port as well.CHECK PRICING
