Ithought my screen time stats were bad pre-pandemic, but now the numbers are way off the charts (like, the only time I’m not glued to my phone or laptop is when I’m working out or eating dinner; yikes). And as a result, my formerly rare migraines feel like they’ve been getting more and more frequent recently—fun, right? (No!)

Apparently, though, I’m not alone. In a survey published in The Journal of Headache and Painmore than 59 percent of people who experience migraines reported an increase in migraine frequency during the pandemic. And according to Shae Datta, MD, the director of concussion and cognitive neurology at NYU Langone Hospital—Long Island, it’s most likely due to all the increased blue light exposure we’re getting now that a lot of us are working from home (plus, the fact that living through a global pandemic is super stressful).

So what’s the solution? Enter: glasses for migraines. You read that right. You can shop for glasses that are specifically made to relieve headaches, migraines, and eyestrain. I know this may be huge news to some of you (as it was for moi), so get ready to do a mini deep dive with me on all the benefits of wearing glasses for migraines, below.

How do glasses for migraine relief work?

No, they aren’t special frames that massage your temples or anything like that (though that’d be pretty cool). Instead, it’s all about the lenses. Basically, when you have a migraine, the nerves in your head become much more sensitive than normal, as explained by Christopher Gottschalk, MD, director of headache medicine and chief of the division of general neurology at Yale School of Medicine. As a result, this also leaves you more sensitive to light in general (particularly to blue light, fluorescents, and sunlight, Dr. Datta adds).

Migraine glasses are designed to filter out some of that harsh light, relieving you of delibating headaches (or, at the very least, ensuring that light doesn’t make your head feel worse).

Who should wear them?

According to Dr. Gottschalk, migraine glasses are most helpful for people who know they have photophobia, or sensitivity to light, during migraine attacks. And even if light isn’t exactly the main issue for you when you have a migraine, you might be surprised to find that the glasses still help, he adds.

Sold on getting a pair? I thought so. But before we talk about your options, a quick PSA: If your migraines have suddenly gotten worse, or you never used to get them and now you’re getting them constantly, talk to your doctor. The same goes for if you’re relying on over-the-counter pain meds to treat your migraines on the reg. Your doc will help you get to the bottom of what’s causing your headaches and make sure there’s not an underlying health problem you need to take care of.

OK, now that we’re v informed on what glasses for migraines are, let’s get to the good stuff. Below, seven pairs worth trying.ADVERTISEMENT – CONTINUE READING BELOW 1THIS BOLD OPTIONLaurel Glasses
