When you buy an Omega (or most other prestigious Swiss watch brands) at an authorized dealer, the price will be a bit higher. There is generally not much price differentiation for a given model between authorized dealers, regardless of whether that dealer is online or not.
Prices can be 30% to 40% cheaper at an unauthorized dealer — a so-called “gray market” dealer. To be clear, fine watches bought on the gray market are generally new, authentic watches — not counterfeits. (There are some shady gray-market dealers that might sell you a refurbished watch as a new one, but that’s a different issue altogether.)
So why would you buy from an authorized dealer? Because if you do, you get the manufacturer’s warranty — in this case, Omega. If something goes wrong with the watch during the warranty, Omega will make it right. And after the warranty expires, Omega and its authorized service centers will continue to be willing to service or fix your watch. In fact, you can probably take it to any authorized Omega dealer (even if that’s not where you bought the watch) to get it repaired or serviced.
If you buy a gray-market Omega (which is nonetheless authentic), none of this is the case. Omega will not ever be willing to repair or service the watch, and authorized service centers probably won’t either. You’ll be relying on an independent watchmaker or the store where you bought it. To be fair, there are good independent watchmakers who can do a perfectly great job servicing and repairing gray-market Omegas. But you have to find them first.
Also, if you plan to resell your watch someday, gray-market Omegas will not command as high a price.
Note that most brick-and-mortar jewelers will be authorized dealers. The same cannot be said for online boutiques. Personally, for a significant purchase like this, I prefer to go with a bricks and mortar store, because you get a relationship with the salesperson — someone you can hold responsible if something goes wrong. Plus, you can try on the watch before buying. There are watches that look and are gorgeous, but maybe not on your wrist.
The Omega collection, which began its debut in 1948, unveiled the Speedmaster in 1957. It was originally meant to appeal to racing enthusiasts with its sleek design. The Speedmaster was crafted to complement the Omega 28.9, commemorating the Omega’s usage during the Olympics. However, this all changed in Fall of 1962 when Wally Schirra, an astronaut traveling on the Mercury-Atlas 8, wore an Omega Speedmaster on board the spacecraft. NASA began to recognize the Speedmaster’s efficiency for space travel, and theMoonwatch was born.
