best under 5 inch smartphone

Today, we review the Best Under 5 Inch Smartphone models. Smartphone with screens smaller than 5.5 inches were standard a short while ago, but devices with 6.3 inches or more are dominating the market right now. This is a a result of the popular aspect ratios 2:1, 19:9 or even 21:9. Then we have a new category of foldable smartphones, so devices with screens bigger than 7 inches will not be unusual in the near future.

Compact devices are still popular, so we want to present the best compact smartphones in the following ranking. The display size ist not as important as the actual size of the smartphone, so devices with a good screen-to-body ratio will benefit. The contenders must not surpass a length of 146 millimeters, but we will also sort out very bulky devices.

The following smartphone ranking might be interesting as well:

1. Samsung Galaxy S10e

As far as small Android phones go, you can’t do much better than the Samsung Galaxy S10e. Even though it is small in size with a height of just 142.2mm, it still packs many high-end features — and has a reasonable price tag to boot.

With the Galaxy S10e, you are getting the same high-end processor you’ll find in the main Galaxy S10 and even the Galaxy S10 Plus (the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 or Exynos 9820, depending on your region). You also get the Android 9 Pie (upgradeable to Android 10), up to 8GB of RAM, and up to 256GB of internal storage.

The Galaxy S10e has a comparatively small battery at just 3,100mAh, and its camera system is nowhere near as good as the systems on its larger siblings. Regardless, it’s a great device that is still considered a small Android phone.CHECK PRICING

2. Google Pixel 3

Pixel 3 XL hands on

We’ll admit that with a height of 145.6mm, the Google Pixel 3 just barely crosses our self-imposed limit for small Android phones. However, if you’re looking for a phone that won’t feel gigantic in your hand but still offers a lot of power, this is certainly worth a look.

The Pixel 3 comes with 2018’s top-of-the-line processor, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845. It comes with a near-stock version of Android 9 Pie (upgradeable to Android 10), 4GB of RAM, and up to 128GB of storage. However, the highlight of the Pixel 3 is its camera, which is still among the best ever made. What’s more, the camera software is constantly getting tweaked by Google, which makes the Pixel 3 a solid investment if consistent Android and feature updates are important to you.

Keep in mind that the Pixel 4 has already been announced, but the handset is slightly larger than its predecessor, coming in at 147.1mm.CHECK PRICING

3. Palm Phone

Palm Phone - Small Android phones.

The Palm Phone is not just one of the small Android phones you can buy today — it is downright tiny. With a height of just 96.6mm, the device is barely larger than a credit card.

Originally, the Palm Phone was sold as a companion device exclusively through Verizon. It was meant to be used as a device you would take with you when having your primary phone wasn’t practical. You would need a “regular” phone attached to a Verizon account to get it.

Now you can buy the Palm Phone from Verizon on its own and use it as your primary device. You can even get the unlocked version from Palm’s website and then activate it on the carrier of choice. The main drawback to the Palm Phone is that it’s not very powerful and would probably be frustrating to use as your only smartphone. However, this list wouldn’t be complete without it, and it looks pretty darn cool! The Palm Phone is definitely a conversation starter.CHECK PRICING

  • Display: 3.3-inch, HD
  • SoC: Snapdragon 435
  • RAM: 3GB
  • Storage: 32GB
  • Camera: 12MP
  • Front camera: 8MP

4. Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact

Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact - Small Android phones.

With a height of just 135mm, the Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact should be one of the top contenders in your search for the best of the small Android phones available. Not only is it small — even smaller than the Galaxy S10e — but it’s also got some decent specs.

The Xperia XZ2 Compact features the Snapdragon 845 processor, 4GB of RAM, and 64GB of storage. It also comes in four gorgeous colors: Black, White Silver, Coral Pink, and Moss Green.CHECK PRICING

5. Unihertz Atom

Unihertz Atom - Small Android phones.

The Unihertz Atom is the smallest phone on this list, and it could very well be the tiniest Android phone around. This little guy measures a mere 96mm in height, which is slightly shorter than the Palm Phone. The Unihertz Atom is thicker and heavier at 18mm and 108g, though.

Regardless, this is a fun small Android phone bound to start many a conversation. Specs are not really impressive, but in our tests we found it to be an alright phone for casual users who don’t demand much from a phone. The tiny screen makes it harder to type and watch media on, but people who use this phone probably don’t want to do much of that.

Keep in mind that Unihertz has already announced the Atom’s successor, but you can’t get your hands on it just yet. You can, however, pre-order it via the company’s Kickstarter campaign. It’s called the Unihertz Atom XL and is still a small phone despite its name, with a height of just 134.5mm.CHECK PRICING

Samsung

Although the Samsung Galaxy A40 wasn’t officially released in the United States, it’s pretty easy to get it here thanks to the magic of online shopping. Those of you living in the United Kingdom and the rest of Europe will have a much easier time grabbing the device, which is only 144.4mm tall.

The Galaxy A40 stands out on this list for one reason: it crams a 5.9-inch display into its relatively small body. The screen-to-body ratio of the Galaxy A40 is even higher than that of its more expensive cousin, the Galaxy S10e. The Galaxy S10e, however, is the more powerful of the two.

The Galaxy A40 is stuck with just 4GB of RAM, 64GB of internal storage, and a weaker camera system. Still, you’ll pay much less for the Galaxy A40 — in some cases half the cost of the S10e.CHECK PRICING

Since the Nokia 8 Sirocco was one of the first of its kind, it’s a bit old as compared to some of the other devices on this list of small Android phones. However, it still has some decent specs, runs Android 9.0 Pie, and meets our size requirement by being only 140.9mm tall.

The Nokia 8 Sirocco comes with 2017’s flagship processor, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835. It has a solid 6GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, and a pretty decent camera setup.CHECK PRICING
