Best Electric Scooters: The Official ESG List

We have formulated our own list of the top electric scooters for adults available as of March 2020, according to data and science. Our team of experts performed extensive testing on more than forty electric scooters and combined our findings with a massive survey of more than 750 electric scooter owners. The result is our list of the top twelve electric scooters.

For the most part, our top list agrees with surveyed owners — except for a few exclusions and substitutions. For example, we replaced the GOTRAX V2 with the Xr, a newer (and improved in some aspects) version of the same scooter. The FFR Horizon, which was top-rated by survey respondents, is replaced by the Swift (a better-featured, though lesser-known variants of the same Titan T8 scooter). Additionally, we’ve dropped the WideWheel Pro, a great and well-rated, because it’s not well-rounded enough for a “best of” list.

12. GOTRAX Xr: Best Cheap (Low Cost) Electric Scooter

We absolutely love the GOTRAX Xr and can’t say enough good things about it — it is an amazing value for the price and ticks all the boxes for features we look for: pneumatic tires, a disc brake, reasonable weight, and quality construction. All these factors helped it replace the GOTRAX GXL Commuter v2 as the Best Electric Scooter Under $300.

Best New Scooter Under $300 | GoTrax XR / ULTRA Electric Scooter Review

Pros

The scooter is super portable and at 11.8 kg, about as light as they currently come. Though it doesn’t have the bomb-proof construction of a Dualtron scooter, build quality is good. Fit-and-finish is excellent and there aren’t nagging creaks or loose steering that you might expect on a cheaper scooter.

The design and interface aren’t over-complicated; the scooter doesn’t have over-the-top swag lighting. Everything about it is simple and clean. We really appreciate a simple scooter that is just straightforward to use and works. The 23.5 kmh speed isn’t insane, but if you’re new to scooters you’ll find it fun and surprisingly zippy.

GOTRAX has a strong US presence with offices in Colorado and Texas and has excellent US-based customer support. We have contacted them numerous times about their scooters and received fast and helpful responses.

Cons

Even the best electric scooter is going to have some cons. The main drawback of this scooter is its short range, which we have tested to be 14.7 kilometers. This doesn’t sound like much, but if you’re commuting a few miles back and forth to work or around a college campus, this will do the job. You can also keep a charger at your workplace or destination and charge before the ride home.

The second drawback is that though the scooter is zippy on the flat, especially if you’re not pushing the weight limit, the 250-watt motor isn’t powerful enough to take on huge hills. If your commute involves steep inclines, expect that you’ll have to add in some of your own kicking to slowly get up really steep hills.

If you want to conquer super-steep hills, then you need to look at a much more powerful scooter (and consequently heavier and more expensive). Consider the Zero 9 or EMOVE Touring for better hill conquering ability.

11. Xiaomi Mi M365

The Xiaomi Mi M365 finds itself on (or at the top) of many best electric scooter rankings for adults — it is the winner of our Best Electric Scooter Under $600 category.  This is for good reason. We chose the Xiaomi Mi M365 for our best adult scooters list because it is one of the most well-balanced scooters.  It has an excellent feature set (range, weight, top speed, quality) at a great price point.

Why the Xiaomi M365 is the Most Popular Scooter in the World | Xiaomi Mi M365 Review

Pros

  • Lots of hackability, modifications, upgrades
  • Super portable
  • “Last mile” commuting
  • More premium entry-level scooter
  • Daily commuting of 15 to 24 kilometers
  • Large user-base for the availability of parts and support

Compared to slightly cheaper GOTRAX Xr, you’ll get almost 50% more range and access to do firmware hacking for faster top speed and custom braking programs. The higher price point will also get you blue-tooth enabled smartphone connectivity — though we personally prefer speed and other cockpit features to be built into the scooter itself — which is what Xiaomi has for its upgraded M365 Pro.

Cons

The Mi M365 is great on the flat, but the 250-watt motor and timid firmware make this scooter not great on hills. You can mitigate some of this by upgrading the firmware, but you do need to be technically savvy and risk bricking your scooter.

The Mi M365 lacks a built-in information display (speedometer, odometer, etc). You must install the Bluetooth-enabled app and have your phone out while using the scooter to get this information. This means you’ll need an attachable phone mount (or to ride with just one hand).

10. Segway Ninebot Max

No list would be complete without the venerable Segway Ninebot Max — a scooter with the exact design of the award-winning Xiaomi Mi M365, but with beefier frame and more power and longer range. The Max also introduces much larger, tubeless pneumatic tires that give a great ride and are more flat-resistant than normal inner tube tires.

An additional upgrade, compared to the original, is the introduction of an informative LED display, which shows basic information such as speed, battery life, and odometer.

Xiaomi M365 Pro Gets Bulked Up! | Ninebot Max Review

Pros

  • Wonderfull and simple design
  • More durable than the original M365
  • Best range to price ratio
  • Flat-resistant tubeless pneumatic tires

If you rode the original M365 as your personal model or as a shared Bird version and loved it — but wanted a bit more — then the Max is the answer. It’s not a super fast scooter but has an incredible range for its price. The Max is a great all-around scooter that is very practical and durable. If you need something that can handle a daily commute — getting you there reliably with minimal maintenance — the Max may be the solution.

Cons

With increased battery and a reinforced frame, comes extra weight. The Max — at 18 kgs — is 50% heavier than its relatively lightweight predecessor. This isn’t a deal-breaker, but is notable.

9. TurboWheel Swift

The TurboWheel Swift is currently one of the best values of as far as Titan T8 variants go. Unlike other variants, it sports both front and rear drum brakes, which improve braking and add redundancy — for safety.

The Swift is the next logical step up if you the trusty Xiaomi Mi M365 doesn’t suit your needs. It offers more range, more power, a better ride, and folds much more much compactly for storage. It doesn’t have an official IP (water resistance) rating, but we tested it in light rain and in damp conditions with no problems.

Why The TurboWheel Swift is a Fantastic Entry-Level Scooter

Pros

  • Very versatile scooter
  • Folds compactly
  • Dual, low maintenance braking system
  • Good balance of range and weight
  • Suspension makes it suitable for longer rides

The TurboWheel Swift is a versatile scooter for daily commuting — at 18 kgs it is light enough for occasional lifting. It has collapsing handlebars that allow it to fold even smaller. Its nearly 32-kilometer range along with dual suspension makes this scooter suitable for longer rides in all road conditions.

Cons

Though we love the addition of dual drum brakes, some of the other features haven’t been well thought out. On the version we tested, the carrying handle and dolly wheels were executed poorly and didn’t add any value.

Like other T8 variants, the scooter lacks an official IP rating (water resistance). We know these scooters can tolerate some light rain, however, water damage will likely void the warranty. Additionally, the solid rear tire has traction in wet conditions — requiring you to exercise caution.

8. EMOVE Touring

The EMOVE Touring is a fearsome scooter that is the definitive winner of the Best Electric Scooter Under $900 category.

Compared to competitors in this class the Touring offers more of everything: higher top speed, more comfortable ride, massive deck, better hill-climbing and suspension. As an added benefit, the Touring remains one of the most portable due to its 17.7 kg weight and 94-cm folded length — one of the shortest despite its massive deck.

What makes the EMOVE Touring the Most Comfortable $800 Scooter | Emove Touring Review

Pros

  • Huge deck for a very comfortable ride
  • Folds very compactly
  • Good power and range
  • Supports riders up to 150 kg
  • Nearly 13-centimeters of ground clearance

The Touring is simply a great all-around scooter that might well be the ultimate portable commuter scooter. It’s full-featured enough for longer rides, but light enough to carry and small enough to store.

Cons

The Touring has somewhat small tires — just 20-centimeters — given its decent top speed of 38.6 kmh. The suspension helps to mitigate the small tire size, but we would liked to seen at least 22 cm tires, if not larger.

Though the Touring can tolerate incidental water contact, it has no official IP rating which means you must be very careful to not void the warranty.

7. Zero 9

Pushing $1k (USD), the Zero 9 is the start of the really premium scooters, but but you get what you pay for. In the case of the Zero 9, one of the top electric scooters, this ends up being quite a bit. The dual braking system with disc and drum brakes, large pneumatic tires, a powerful 600 W motor, and long range round out the package. The Zero 9 currently reigns as the Best Electric Scooter Under $1200.

The Zero 9 is the bigger, better brother of the Zero 8 with bigger all-pneumatic tires, an additional disc brake, and a more powerful motor.

Why the Zero 9 is the Perfect Scooter for Me | Zero 9 Review

Pros

The Zero 9 excels at:

  • Excellent hill climbing ability
  • Great for daily round-trip commuting up to 39 kilometers
  • Dual suspension and 23 cm pneumatic tires smooth-over rough urban roads
  • Superb quality, durability, brand reputation

Cons

Quality parts are heavy and bigger battery capacity make the scooter heavier (18.1 kgs) compared to cheaper, run-of-the-mill models that are less than 14 kgs.

6. EMOVE Cruiser

This EMOVE Cruiser is one of the best long-ranged scooters out there and possibly the most complete scooter.

Some versions of this scooter will eventually become the best selling general-purpose scooter and this is why we consider it one of the top electric scooters for adults. It is very well-balanced — like the Toyota Camry or Honda Accord of scooters. It is not fully luxury but is big enough, powerful enough, and comfortable enough to suit the widest variety of needs out there.

4 Reasons Why the Best Just Got Better | EMOVE Cruiser Review

Pros

  • Electron sipping motors provide an amazing range
  • Very well-rounded, solidly designed scooter
  • One of the best folding mechanisms on any scooter

Because the controller is well designed (you don’t accelerate fast) the battery seems to last forever. Whereas when we tear up the fast models, they seem to deplete the batteries quickly. This will win the marathon.

Cons

At 25 kgs, the scooter is just beyond the 20 kg maximum that we consider suitable for true portability.

The downside of the electron-sipping controller is that the scooter, like a Camry, isn’t fun like a WideWheel. It doesn’t have that youthful zip that you may want to unleash on the weekends (though this thing will go the distance).

5. Zero 10X

The Zero 10X is an amazing bang for your buck — you get a 35 kg monster scooter with dual 1000 W motors and legendary build quality at a fraction of the cost.

We call this scooter the Dualtron killer, because it is one of the few that can legitimately challenge some of the Dualtron models. The awesome value, feature set, build quality, and brand reputation, helped the Zero 10X get a place among the other best electric scooter for grown ups (note: it’s currently less than $2,000 with a Zero 10X coupon code).

Though, as you move to the top end of the Dualtron spectrum (see our Dualtron review and comparison for more info), the higher-end Dualtrons will outpace it in terms of raw power and torque.

Zero 10X Road Tests: Speed, Acceleration, and Braking

Pros

  • Best suspension
  • Head-turner
  • Supreme 150 kg weight capacity
  • Stem stability
  • Dual 1000 W Motors
  • Long wheelbase improves stability
  • Amazing value

The Zero 10X will give you Dualtron-like performance and quality, but at a budget price. This scooter also has a unique color scheme that will draw attention.

We prefer the suspension on the Zero 10X above any other scooter, period. It is basically a trampoline and does an amazing job gobbling up the imperfections in the road. The Zero 10X stem collar has two clamping mechanisms and is about double the length of the Dualtron lineup giving it less wobble than its worthy rivals.

Construction is bombproof — we punished this scooter extensively during the 2019 Electric Scooter Roadtrip and were not able to harm it.

Cons

  • Not portable – handlebars do not fold, stem does not lock down when folded
  • Cheap key mechanism
  • Stem can be a bit finicky

This scooter is not portable.  Carrying it up a flight of stairs or throwing into the back of the car (unless you’re as beastly as the scooter) is not going to be easy. While the stem does fold, the handlebars do not. This means you won’t be able to hide this scooter under your table at the local coffee shop. We noticed, similar to others, that the key mechanism is prone to simply dissembling by itself. While you can still turn it on, it does require tightening and is disappointing considering the otherwise high quality.

4. Kaabo Mantis

The Kaabo Mantis is a powerful yet very affordable and high-quality electric scooter with fantastic range. The Mantis base version is one of the fastest scooters you can buy on the market, yet is much more affordable than the Dualtron lineup. If you are looking for the entry-level ridiculously fast scooter that is still somewhat portable, then the Mantis is an attractive option.

Scooter Chat Live #9 – Featuring Kaabo Mantis with Special Guest CEO of Fluid Freeride via Live Chat

Pros

  • Great suspension and huge pneumatic tires
  • Good build quality
  • Ridiculous value
  • Portable enough

Cons

The Mantis has few cons — it could be a bit lighter, but for the power and range its specs are amazing. The early generations of this scooter had isolated incidents of a stem bolt failing, but this has been resolved and all scooters shipping with Fluid Freeride have a stem bolt fix installed.

3. Kaabo Mantis Pro

The Kaabo Mantis Pro is has everything we loved about the original Mantis but with tons of extras. The Pro has more power for faster acceleration, a bigger battery for longer range, and beefed-up fully-hydraulic brakes.

Pros

  • World-class power-to-weight ratio
  • Fully hydraulic disc brakes
  • Can hang with scooters almost 2X its price

Cons

Like the base version of the Mantis, the Pro has few cons. It could be faster, but it’s one of the fastest scooters we’ve tested. It could be lighter, but nothing in its price range is lighter.

2. Dualtron Thunder

The Dualtron Thunder remains one of the top scooters due to its incredible power and amazing quality. It is the original premium beast scooter and received near perfect ratings from owners in our annual survey.

The Thunder is stacked with features that make it one of the greatest and baddest scooters of all time — fully massive 28-cm tubeless pneumatic tires, fully hydraulic disc brakes, and ferocious dual motors with 5400-watts of peak power.

Highlights

Pros

  • Power, acceleration, range, top speed
  • Very good build quality

This is one of the fastest electric scooter from an established manufacturer. It not only manages up the steepest hills in San Francisco, it literally accelerates fast enough to give tourists whiplash.

Cons

The Dualtron Thunder, like other MiniMotors Dualtron scooters, suffers from stem wobble, which is disappointing in an almost $4,000 USD scooter.

The scooter is almost 45 kgs — you’re not going to be taking this on the bus with you or throwing it into the back of an Uber (unless you’re The Rock). However, the scooter isn’t designed for that — the Thunder is designed for getting around on its own two wheels.  Fast.

1. Kaabo Wolf Warrior 11: King of the Road

The Kaabo Wolf Warrior 11 is King of the Road. It is as powerful as the Dualtron Thunder (in fact, it shares the same LCD throttle and controllers) yet is less expensive and has a stem that is rock solid. The Wolf has an incredible suspension that offers inches of travel; the Wolf is adept both on- and off-road.

Baddest Scooter On The Planet | Kaabo Wolf Warrior 11 Review

Pros

  • High-quality MiniMotors components
  • Ridiculous power and real-world range
  • Fantastic suspension
  • Rock-solid stem and handlebars
  • Huge and very comfortable deck

Cons

Though King of the Road, the Wolf Warrior is not without flaw. Its weight and size make it very difficult to lift maneuver. Suffice it to say, it’s not portable.

Some of its attachments e.g. the massive LED headlights — have a tendency to loosen in time, unless secured with thread locker.
