What do you get for the money? Eurocopter says the EC 135’s cabin has been completely reimagined by Hermès Interior and Design to maximize the available space in what most agree is already a spacious passenger compartment. Surfaces from floor to ceiling have been covered in “Toile H,” a Hermès staple used in the manufacture of the firm’s travel-ware going back to the 1920s. Seats (four in the main cabin and two in the cockpit) and banquette are handcrafted and upholstered in naturally grained calf leathers.
But there’s more to this interior than good looks and high-end materials. The Hermès EC 135 also uses fabrics and leathers that are intended to soften ambient noise and vibration, Eurocopter says. In addition, consoles, drawers and cabinets have been recessed or placed entirely out of view, and a sliding glass partition separates the passenger area and cockpit, enhancing privacy while still allowing natural light to enter. Overhead air-conditioning ducts have been center-aligned across the ceiling for a cleaner look. Even the landing gear was redesigned to allow for more “elegant access,” presumably by passengers in high heels and short dresses.

Eurocopter’s EC 135 is a very powerful lightweight twin-engine multipurpose helicopter and is operational worldwide. Over 680 have been delivered since the helicopter entered service in 1996 with German Air rescue company Deutsche Rettungsflugwacht and the helicopter is flown by over 100 customers in 27 countries. A military version, the EC 635, has also been developed and has entered service with the Royal Jordanian Air Force.

The German Army Air Corps has been operating 14 EC 135 helicopters for training since 2000. Recent orders include five for the French Customs Service (ordered in December 2005), two for the Lithuanian Border Guard (delivered in December 2006), two for the Swiss Army for VIP transport (ordered in April 2006) and four for INAER (ordered in September 2006).
In November 2003, Eurocopter signed an agreement with Eurocopter Romania (a joint venture with IAR) for local assembly of the EC 135 in Brasov.
In March 2006, the Spanish Ministry of the Interior selected the EC 135 to upgrade the fleets of the Spanish police and security forces. 48 helicopters are required. The helicopters are being locally assembled at Eurocopter Espana’s Albacete site and the first locally assembled helicopter was delivered in November 2008.
In January 2007, the French Gendarmerie placed an order for 37 EC 135 helicopters to be delivered from late 2008.
In October 2007 the Austrian police ordered eight and, in November 2007, the Netherlands Police ordered six EC135.
In June 2008, the Polish Ministry of Health placed an order for 23 EC 135 helicopters to be delivered from 2009–2010.
The helicopter is available as the EC 135T2, powered by the Turbomeca ARRIUS 2B2 engine or the EC 135P2, powered by the Pratt & Whitney PW206B2. The EC 135 can be configured for passenger and VIP transport with up to eight seats, law enforcement, emergency medical service, search and rescue and other roles.
EC135 T2I/P2I upgrade
In February 2006, Eurocopter announced a major upgrade for the EC135. The new helicopter, designated EC135 T2i/P2i, has an increased take-off weight of 2,910kg and a reduced empty weight of 1,445kg, allowing a payload increase of 80kg.“Eurocopter have announced a major upgrade for the EC135 – the EC135 T2I/P2I.”
This increased useful load translates to either one additional passenger, more fuel for 100km extra range or 30 minutes more endurance. Other improvements include an additional 180kg in hover weight and 2,000ft in hover altitude.
The new helicopter received EASA certification in February 2006 and deliveries begin in September 2006. The upgrade is also available as a retrofit.
The helicopter incorporates Eurocopter’s low-noise patented Fenestron tail rotor. The array of ten blades in the Fenestron are arranged asymmetrically and are spaced at different intervals which substantially reduces the helicopter noise.
The four-bladed, bearingless, main rotor system is made of fibre-reinforced composite. The built-in anti-resonance isolation system also contributes to low vibration and noise level. The external noise level is 6dB lower than the regulatory specification and allows the operation of the helicopter in highly populated areas and in close approach to hospitals.
EC-135 law enforcement helicopter
Police and federal versions of the EC 135 are operational with the Basque Police Force of Spain, the Federal Border Police of Germany, State (Lander) Police of Bavaria and Saxony in Germany, Travis County Police in USA and police forces in Sweden, Ireland, Kuwait, Chile, Kuwait and the UK. The helicopters are used for patrol, airborne surveillance, VIP and dignitary transport and firefighting.

SAR and EMS variants
Search and rescue versions and emergency medical service helicopters are operated by Deutsche Rettungsflugwacht (German Air Rescue Service), German Emergency Medical Service, Centre for Emergency Medicine of Pittsburgh, USA, ADAC Luftrettung, CJ Systems and others.
The Emergency Medical Service helicopter can be flown by one or two pilots. The helicopter can carry one or two stretcher patients and up to three doctors and medical attendants. Different medical installations are tailored to the operating organisation’s need.
Loading and unloading is carried out quickly and easily through the extra large sliding doors and the rear clamshell doors. In winching operations, the patient is readily and safely transferred into the hovering helicopter. A combination of an externally mounted load mirror and a backed-up double hook system is installed to ensure safe and secure rescue missions for the patient, flight and medical crew.
Passenger and VIP helicopter
The standard version carries the pilot and six or seven passengers. The VIP / executive version is fitted for four or five VIP passengers. The cabin is fitted with large sliding doors for easy boarding and exit.
Baggage and cargo can be loaded through the rear clamshell doors.

Hellas is based on a laser radar and received certification in Germany in October 2003. The first Hellas-equipped helicopter was delivered in March 2007. Eurocopter offers a choice of two engine types for the EC 135, both types equipped with full authority digital engine control (FADEC). The FADEC system provides enhanced performance, engine protection and power plant monitoring. The engines available are the Turbomeca Arrius 2B2 rated at 426kW continuous power and the Pratt and Whitney Canada PW206B2 rated at 419kW continuous power.
The standard fuel tanks have a capacity of 673l which gives a range of 620km. An additional long-range fuel tank can be fitted as an option which extends the range to 880km.

A private owner in the United Kingdom can fly to Devon and back to London without stopping to refuel. A pub in Oxford, the Manson’s Arms, has a helipad. The photographs of helicopters that visit adorn the walls of the pub. It is a thrilling and bizarre place to visit.
Modern helicopters have engines that are quieter and more efficient with advanced glass cockpits that offer fewer distractions for pilots. Airbus Helicopters’ Ed Sale responded to GQ at the Elite London event giving insight into what to consider when buying a private helicopter.
1. Will You Be the Pilot or the Passenger?
The majority of helicopter owners are pilots so they can fly themselves. Private pilots and those who own a helicopter and fly themselves prefer hands-on, less bulky designs.
Bigger helicopters are usually reserved for professional pilots while the owners sit in the back. The big shots use this as their executive means of transport. Midrange helicopters have administrative abilities too but are fun to handle.
The bigger the aircraft, the more experience a pilot requires. A well-trained amateur can fly any of the Robinson chopper models. The same applies to the B3 and B4 Eurocopter Ecureuil, AgustaWestland Koala and Bell 407. If you are looking at bigger models, like the AgustaWestland A109 with more sophisticated instrumentation, you will need a professional pilot.
If planning to become a pilot, next choose a flying school. Lots of flying schools will issue Private Pilot Licenses PPLs(H). Ask friends with helicopters to recommend a good flying school.
It helps if the flying school is local to you as you need a minimum of 45 hours of training over 12 months. Training costs vary from school to school but expect it to cost around $26,200 (around £20,000). This covers your tests, exams, flying hours, medicals, equipment, and airfield fees.
Training at Heli Air, one of the UK’s largest Robinson helicopter distributors, will cost you $10,500 (around £8,000). This covers theory in subjects like meteorology, air law, and flight planning. A Class 2 medical is compulsory.
After qualifying, you need an annual review to renew your license. You can opt to expand your qualification to include formation flying and night flying. The choice is yours.
2. Predetermine Your Budget
Design, capacity, and the manufacturer determines a helicopter’s price. Set your budget right from the start. It helps narrow your search.
Just like cars, you will have a range of options. Sloane Helicopters marketing director, Giorgio Bendoni, says first-time buyers can choose from the two-seater, single-piston Robinson R22 to the twin-turbine, eight-seater AgustaWestland Grand. It depends on budget flexibility.
While helicopters are expensive, some are cheaper than a Lamborghini. The Robinson R44, the world’s most famous helicopter, costs only $350,000 (around £313,500) and half that second-hand.
When setting your budget, add maintenance costs too. Some helicopter’s cost more to maintain than others. Lower priced helicopters can cost more in maintenance over the long run.
The AgustaWestland Grand and the AgustaWestland A109 are great in sophistication and space, but with an annual depreciation of five to 10 percent, you may want to weigh your options.
You should also consider the cost of insurance, capital investment, and depreciation.
3. How Far Will You Travel?
Aircraft manufacturers offer similar models with a small tweak in design and performance. Cheaper helicopters are smaller. And this limits the number of people it can carry, fuel capacity, and distance it can travel.
So, you need to decide how many people need to travel in your helicopter regularly. Also look at the distance it can travel before needing to refuel. The H125 is a midrange helicopter that guarantees 300 to 350 miles (ca. 563 km) or 2½ hours without refueling.
4. Other Considerations
The Airbus H160 is a new sleek design marketed to business and private customers, while the H125 has strong competition from the Bell 407. The cabin is separate from the cockpit and is luxurious. It has two seats facing each other and is a great option if you have a pilot. In contrast, an Airbus is a better option with you as the pilot as there is no separation from your passengers.
The choice of interior should reflect the helicopter’s purpose. Some people ignore carpets as it is a lot of work to keep clean. Leather seats are an attractive option as are seats with twin leather stitching which are currently in vogue.
Landing Space is Limited
Landing spaces in London are limited due to their tight restrictions on noise control, which limits helicopter paths. Battersea Heliport is the best place to land and continue your journey using other means. Places you can land outside London include Elstree, Denham, Biggin Hill, and Northolt.

Terms You Should Know
There are terms you should know if you intend to own a helicopter:
- VFR (Visual Flying Rules) means you have to keep sight of the ground.

- A two-seat piston engine VFR is a basic helicopter.
- ILS (Instrument Landing System) is what you dial into to get to the ground.
