hair relaxer white girl before and after

Today, we take a look at the Hair Relaxer White Girl Before And After changes and effects. By definition, a hair relaxer is a lotion or cream that makes the hair easier to straighten and manage. It reduces the curl by breaking down the hair strand and chemically altering the texture. Most women who decide to get their hair relaxed have curly hair who want it to be stick straight without any frizz. The results vary depending on your hair type, but usually a hair relaxer will leave your hair straight for about six to eight weeks. Unlike other permanent straightening methods, relaxing your hair will require touch-ups from time to time. You can go to a professional stylist, or you can purchase a hair relaxing kit to be used at home. So what is the best hair relaxer?

Let’s be honest: as black women we all have optimal hair. However, we also know that we want our hair to be straight. That may not always be the case if you have super curly kinky hair anyway. Hair relaxers are what women use on their hair to make it straight, or more wavy than curly. Many women who decide to relax their hair always ask is it bad for you? Relaxing your hair can do a lot of things for you, but also has some negative consequences. To begin with, we will talk about the things that happen to your hair when you decide to get a relaxer and let us take a closer look at how the product works and some of the long term effects of having it

Hair Relaxer White Girl Before And After

What are the benefits of going to a professional?

While getting your hair relaxed by a professional is expensive, it is the best option if you decide to relax at all. Porch said professional stylists like herself know how to care for your hair and can properly add all the nutrients that have been stripped during the chemical process. A professional can perform a “strand test,” which will test the strength of your hair in order to further assess which type of relaxer is best for you. Porch added that professionals have better, stylist-approved hair products that can help specially treat your hair. Apart from their years of experience, some professionals actually keep records of what treatments you have had or what procedures other clients had that will help them determine how strong the relaxer should be for your hair type.

What are the different types of hair relaxers?

Hair relaxers, most commonly, are available in two types: Lye relaxers and No-Lye relaxers. Opinions on the two vary, but as with everything, it depends on your hair type and texture. Lye relaxers are known to work quickly on the hair, but as a result they might also rinse out of your hair easily. Their main ingredient is sodium hydroxide, and they are also known as “alkali” relaxers. No-lye, on the other hand, is mostly made of calcium hydroxide, which can dry out the hair. However, no-lye is better for people with sensitive scalps. When using no-lye, it is imperative that you use a “de-calcifying” shampoo to prevent calcium buildup.

What are some disadvantages of using hair relaxers?

Hair relaxers are very powerful chemicals; they have to be if you want your hair’s texture altered so drastically. Depending on your hair type, hair relaxers might cause breakage, hair thinning, and stunt your hair growth. Porch said the process may also result in chemical burns on the scalp and other areas — with some women have also complained of scalp irritation, scalp damage or hair loss. Remember that hair relaxers are stripping your hair of its natural oils, so be very attentive to your hair if you decide to relax it.

What are some advantage of using hair relaxers?

Despite the hair breakage and and scalp irritation, Porch said there are some advantages of getting your hair relaxed. Your hair stays straight for the most part and it’s easier to manage and style and less likely to frizz.

Should I get a relaxer?

There’s no right or wrong answer to this question — but Porch always wants to understand from her clients why exactly they want a relaxer. Having straight, relaxed hair is no “easy” task — relaxed hair needs special attention by keeping the hair moisturized, along with weekly deep conditioning, drinking plenty of water, and utilizing leave-in conditioners. Be sure to use a reconstructing shampoo and conditioner the week following your hair relaxing, and stay away from heat that will further dry your hair. It’s important to understand that if you get a relaxer, your hair will be damaged in the long run and will require special care to repair it.Porch said she’s seen healthy and damaged relaxed hair and healthy and damaged natural hair — but it’s all about how you take of your crown.

Despite different ethnicities having different hair textures, hair relaxers are universal. When it comes to hair relaxing, it’s far more important to consider the individual’s hair rather than ethnic origin.

Identify Your Hair Type

The dense tight curls and waves of African Americans’ hair are caused by variations in the diameter of the hair along the length of the hair shaft. Asian and Caucasian hair may also be curly and therefore have varying hair-shaft widths, but usually not as much as African hair. Of course, these are generalities. The hair of a person within any race may vary significantly from the norm.

Evaluate Your Hair

It’s important to assess the current condition of your hair. Has it been processed recently? Colored? Cut? In general, fine textured or heat damaged hair will need less relaxing time than course hair. Always do a strand test before using an at-home relaxer, even if you have used the same relaxer before. Consult a professional before relaxing color treated or previously relaxed hair. Hair that has already been processed requires special consideration, especially in product selection.

With white or Caucasian hair, some hair stylists recommend relaxers with the active ingredients ammonium thioglycholate or guanidine hydroxide. These products are commonly called “no lye” relaxers. They are gentler than relaxers that contain sodium hydroxide, and therefore easier to control on fine textured or delicate hair. However, amonium thioglycholate and guanidine hydroxide break down hair protein bonds according to the same chemical principles as sodium hydroxide. So no-lye relaxers will also damage hair if used improperly.

What Relaxers Do

Home hair relaxers straighten hair by permanently rearranging the protein structure of the hair shaft. Strong alkaline chemicals are applied to the hair to break the sulfide bonds that hold the protein molecules together. The hair is combed straight and the chemicals are allowed to act for several minutes. The relaxer is rinsed from the hair and a neutralizing chemical is applied to the hair to stop the bond breaking process.

Relaxing hair, at home or in the salon, always results in some damage to the hair. To minimize damage, relaxing must be timed precisely, the hair checked frequently, and the relaxer removed from the hair immediately once hair is straight. Miscalculation of application time or misjudging hair condition can result in significant hair breakage and even temporary bald patches. Having your hair relaxed by an experienced professional is always safer.

Mizani Hair Relaxer Unisex Kit – Best Unisex Product

best hair relaxer for caucasian hair

If you’ve used hair straighteners or relaxers before, then you probably already know that Mizani is one of the best brands on the market today for high-quality, effective products.

The Mizani Hair Relaxer Unisex Kit is awesome because you get a large amount of products consisting of four 7.5 ounces sensitive scalp relaxer base, four 2 ounce sensitive scalp activators, as well as four wooden spatulas (one for each use).

If you have really sensitive skin or dermatitis and can’t ordinarily use hair relaxers, you’re going to love Mizani’s kit. This one has worked wonders with those with sensitive skin, and won’t burn or make you have to rinse out after just a few minutes. It’s gentle and will leave your hair in a super-healthy condition.

We will say that the one thing we weren’t 100% pleased with, was the fact that it’s a bit more difficult or tedious as far as the application process goes. With that being said, we’re going to go ahead and list off the instructions, so you know what you’ll have to do every time you apply this chemical hair straightener.

best black hair relaxer brand

First, you must check the state of both your hair and your scalp. If you color or straighten your hair a lot, and your hair is already damaged or brittle, we do not recommend using this product.

In addition, if you have any sores, scratches, or any kind of irritation on your scalp, do not use this product.

Avoid intense brushing, combing, or pulling your hair. Make sure to wear protective gloves when applying the product. Before you apply the product to your entire head, we can’t stress enough the importance of conducting a strand test using the relaxer application instructions which are included.

If your scalp and hair are in good or great condition, then you can proceed.

Mix by pouring one conditioner portion of the butter blend sensitive scalp activator into the jar with the butter blend sensitive scalp relaxer base (similar to the hair dying process if you’ve done that at home before).

Grab the mixing spatula and stir together until the two products become one, are smooth, without any kinds of lumps or bumps. After everything looks uniform, let it sit for five minutes.

If your hair is processed or colored, then you should leave it on for 10-15 minutes. If It’s fine, 18 minutes, and if it’s normal to thick, 18-20 minutes.

Apply and spread the Creme Normalizing Conditioner to all of your hair, and cover your hair with a plastic cap. Make sure to never apply heat! Leave it in for ten minutes, and rinse thoroughly.

Once you’re done, apply the butter blend sensitive scalp balance hair bath to your locks. Lather and rinse completely with warm water (not hot). Then, go ahead and repeat.

Alter Ego – Best Product For Thick Hair

best rated hair relaxers

Alter Ego’s Linange Shea Butter Relaxer is one of the best if you want your hair to come out sleek, shiny, and straight!

Straight off the bat, we’re going to say that we weren’t a fan of the smell. It is very chemically-smelling, also this is somewhat normal for relaxers.

If you have coarse or thick hair and are having trouble finding a relaxer that really suits your needs, then check this one out, as well!

We found that while we had to use more product to get the same or similar results with other products, this one we actually had some product left over, which was cool!

If you have fragile hair or fine hair, you’re going to enjoy the Linange Shea Butter Relaxer, too. It gives less irritation than most of the products we tried, however, it is notably more expensive, as well

We really liked the fact that after you’re finished using the product, your scalp Isn’t all dry and irritated afterward, like what happens with some other products.

You do need to use the conditioning neutralizer and to fully rinse the relaxer out with a lot of warm water. We found it best to use the conditioning neutralizer at least a few times, and finish with a mild shampoo.

What We Liked

  • Great product for fine, delicate hair, but can be used on coarse hair, as well
  • You can use much less product to get similar results as others provide
  • Is great for those with sensitive skin
  • Leaves hair soft and silky

What We Didn’t Like

  • Notably more expensive than comparable products
  • Smell was strong and chemically

Softsheen Carson Dark And Lovely – Best Product For Creating Shine

natural hair relaxers without chemicals

Dark and Lovely by Softsheen Carson is probably the most “famous” and best relaxer for black hair out there, today. Over and over again, it’s been proven to be one of the best and is renowned for its multi-step process that makes sure hair is protected and comes out looking healthy, silky, and straight.

The Healthy Gloss 5 they have going on is supposed to be the “next generation in relaxing”. They have a unique system in place, with a silk keratin serum, a moisture conditioner, a moisture hair crème, shea butter conditioning relaxer crème, and crème activator. While that might seem like a lot, they each have their own purpose.

They together, provide moisture, shine, strength, softness, and body. The silk keratin serum instantly provides strength and protection, giving that silky-smooth finish. The moisture conditioner recharges hair with five times more hydration, and the moisture hair crème also replenishes hair with shine and softness.

Ideally, this is for fine-to-regular hair types. What we really didn’t like about it, was that it didn’t work very well for thick/coarse-haired women as well. If you take a look at the video below, you’ll see an example of this. The woman used the product but still came out with quite curly/wavy hair.

Another slight issue we had with this home hair relaxer, was the fact that it did have so many steps to it, and all must be followed properly. Long story short, it got quite tedious.

What We Liked

  • Works very well with fine/thin hair
  • Has an extensive system in place for making sure hair is hydrated, silky, and supple
  • Leaves hair very shiny
  • Very well-known

What We Didn’t Like

  • Doesn’t work as well with thick/coarse hair
  • The application process was tedious

Hawaiian Silky Signature Collection – Best No Lye Product

relaxers that don't damage hair

In our experience, we have not found any no-lye relaxer that works as well as the Hawaiian Silky. We aren’t the only ones who are incredibly impressed with this product (check the video above).

Haven’t heard of lye relaxers or no-lye relaxers before? Here’s a short summary.

Lye relaxers feature the main active ingredient of sodium hydroxide. The pH level in lye relaxers are around 12-14, and for no-lye, around 9-11. Now, our hair should typically be around 4-5.

So, does this mean lye relaxers are bad? Not necessarily, as many evidently work well. However, know that a lye relaxer functions by breaking down the hair’s bonds fast. The good part is that you see less scalp irritation, as it works so quickly.

No-lye relaxers like the Hawaiian Silky features a main active ingredient of calcium hydroxide or guanidine hydroxide. No-lye relaxers often create even dryer hair because of calcium build-up, so we don’t recommend these for sensitive scalps. This can easily be combatted by using a clarifying shampoo and/or deep conditioner regularly.

One thing the Hawaiian Silky is really skilled at is creating a silky smooth finish while maintaining moisturized hair. We recommend this product for fine hair, although it can be used with thicker hair, too.

Combining the benefit of avocados along with Tea Tree Oil, it works to shield and fortify your hair. Avocados contain amino acids, proteins, and a good portion of vitamins e, d, and a, which all work to strengthen your hair.

This best-rated hair relaxer doesn’t just moisturize, but also helps detangle hair and straightens natural curls very well (ideally for thinner hair).

What We Liked

  • No-lye formula
  • Is ideal for those with thinner hair
  • Made with avocado and tea tree oil
  • Strengthens, softens, detangles, and straightens hair well

What We Didn’t Like

  • Can cause calcium build-up, drying out hair
  • Doesn’t work as well on thick/coarse hair

Wella Wellastrate Intense Straight Hair Cream – Best Product For Thick/Natural Hair

no lye relaxers for african american hair

The Wella Wellastrate Straight Cream Intense is one of the best hair relaxers for caucasian hair, but is also one of the best relaxers for black hair!

Wellastrate is a powerful, yet efficient, and reliable straightener which thanks to its new cationic formula base, makes sure to keep the best structural balance as possible. It is unique, which may keep people a little wary about trying it, but we can assure you, it works wonderfully!

No matter if you have thin, regular, or thick hair, the Intense Straight Cream works to maintain moisture while creating supple, straight, and manageable hair. The Hydro Safe Complex increases hair’s own ability to hold moisture, while the moisture formed like this makes sure the hair doesn’t dry out.

If you have sensitive skin, not to worry!

The best hair relaxer has been tested for skin compatibility and makes sure you won’t experience redness or itching like you do with other products.

Creating an optimal balance and preservation of structure makes sure your hair is in its best state; not just looking like it is. The package includes just one tube of the straightening cream, as well as the neutralizing emulsion. We do recommend the starter cream, intermediate spray, as well as the finishing cream to see best results.

What we didn’t like, was that the package does not come with these items, so it seems a bit incomplete.

What We Liked

  • Powerful and efficient straightener
  • Works well on hair types from thin to thick
  • Works to keep your hair healthy from the inside out
  • Cationic formula base creates an optimal balance and preservation of structure

What We Didn’t Like

  • Doesn’t include all of the products we felt it should
  • Is relatively new to the market in comparison with other products
