Huawei Best Seller
Best Overall: Huawei P20 Pro
4.3Buy on Amazon
For all intents and purposes, the new P20 phone is Huawei’s current flagship device. But, because of the sheer insanity that they’ve put into the camera, we had to give the nod here in the “best camera” category. Huawei has entered the dual-lens wars by partnering with legendary lens maker Leica and delivering not two, but three lenses for the rear, main camera system. That includes a head-spinning 40 MP, f/1.8 main camera, a 20 MP, f/1.6 secondary camera, and just for good measure, an 8MP telephoto lens for quality zoom. There’s also a 24 MP front-facing selfie cam.
Not to be outshone is the 6.1-inch OLED display that sports a competitive 1080 x 2240 resolution (not “Retina” levels, but still crisp). And the phone’s color options are surprisingly key indicators of quality here: choose from sleek black, a deep midnight blue gradient, and the coolest one: a “Twilight blue” that fades from purple to aqua. Round that out with a Kirin 970 Octa-core 2.8 GHz/ 1.4 GHz CPU alongside 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, and you have a phone that will feel premium in your hand (and produce premium content for your Instagram feed).Huawei P20 Pro Review
Best Camera: Huawei Honor 7X
Buy on Amazon
With the Huawei Honor 7X, the first thing you notice is the stunning display. At almost six inches long, the 7X screen takes full advantage of its available space, providing an aspect ratio of 18:9 and 2160 x 1080 FHD resolution. In fact, the display is so large, it offers a “split-screen” effect, allowing you to access two apps simultaneously. In terms of hardware, the Honor 7X contains 32GB storage, 3GB RAM, and a 2.36GHz oct-core processor that promises lag-free performance, even when running many apps simultaneously. It also holds a 3,340 mAH battery, which lasts for a whopping 1.5 days on average and features a power-saving mode to further extend your charge.
Finally, the Honor 7X features three high-def cameras: a 16 + 2MP dual rear-facing camera and an 8MP front snapper. Each lens comes equipped with Portrait Mode, capturing professional-looking photos to elevate your social media game to new heights.Honor 7X Review
Best Budget: Huawei Mate SE
Buy on Amazon
Huawei is, in general, a great brand to turn to if you’re looking for a full-fledged smartphone at a budget price. And the Huawei Mate SE epitomizes that with modern features and a sub-$300 price tag. Here’s what you get for your money: first, a 5.93-inch, edge-to-edge (and nearly bezel-less) display that sports a resolution of 1080 x 2160, which is pretty respectable. They’ve also included a dual-lens camera system on the back, with a 16MP main sensor, plus a secondary 2MP supporting lens for portrait effects — it’s definitely not the best megapixel count you can get, but that’s one of the ways Huawei appears to have saved some production cost. Also, the selfie cam gives you 8MP of detail, meaning it’ll be plenty crisp.
This phone has a Kirin 659 Octa-Core processor with 2.36GHz/1.7 GHz speeds, and 4GB of RAM for quick performance. You can pick it up with 64GB of on-board storage, and there’s a 3,340 mAh battery for close-to-all-day performance. Overall, it’s a solid phone with a pretty impressive build quality and form factor, so even if you do want to save some cash, you get a ton of value for your money.
Best Value: Huawei P20 Lite
Buy on Amazon
The P20 Lite, by name, is the more affordable counterpart to the P20 Pro, although it does sacrifice a few choice features. Even with those trade-offs, this phone is a solid value for the price, so if you’re looking to save but aren’t looking dip too far into the budget category, this could be the phone for you.
The 5.84-inch LCD display is smaller and non-OLED, but it does sport 1080 x 2280 pixels, giving you a pretty solid-looking screen. There’s a dual 16MP/2MP system on the back for blur effects, though the camera doesn’t seem to perform quite as well as something like the Pixel line from a software perspective. The front-facing camera is an impressive 16MP, though, so that scores some points back. This phone also features 1080p, 30 fps video capabilities, so by specs alone, it’ll rival the video feature set of even some DSLR and mirrorless cameras.
The processor is a 2.36GHz/1.7 GHz octa-core CPU. You can pick up the phone with 32GB of storage, 4GB of RAM, and the color options range from sleek Midnight Black all the way to a soft Sakura Pink.
Runner-Up, Best Value: Huawei Mate 10 Lite
Buy on Amazon
The Huawei Mate 10 Lite delivers sharp HD images on its 5.9-inch screen, has fast charging capabilities, plus a long lasting battery life. You can shoot videos at 1080p at 30fps while using its dual 16MP cameras and then store your content with either its 64GB internal memory or with a microSD card at 256GB.
With its octa-core CPU with both a 2.36 GHz and 1.7 GHz processor, the Huawei Mate 10 delivers fast loading and its 3240 mAh battery will take you less than 150 minutes to go from 0 to 100 percent. On a full charge, the battery will last about 20 hours for talking time, while standby mode will give you up to 550 hours. The smartphone’s 3.5 mm jack includes active noise-cancelation with its dedicated mic, so you can focus on the clarity of calls without interruption. Available colors include gold, aurora blue and graphite blue.
Best Display: Huawei Honor 8X
Buy on Amazon
Huawei produces several phones with strong all-around value for the price. The Honor 8X display, in particular, stands out as one of the best in the mid-range class. The 6.5-inch borderless view screen all but eliminates the bezel. With a 2340 x 1080 pixel ratio (397ppi), the display is beautiful to look at. A powerful Kirin 710 processor and 4GB of RAM keep apps running smoothly to showcase the display. Combine the rest of the hardware with a whopping 3,750Mah battery and it’s easy to see why the 8X is such a strong value.
On the off-chance you’re not already sold on the 8X, its 20-megapixel camera will seal the deal. With an f/1.8 aperture and phase detection autofocus, the camera never has a hard time choosing the correct exposure. If there’s one omission, it’s the lack of 4K video recording. However, that’s easily overlooked with the camera’s AI capabilities, which can recognize up to 22 different scenarios and choose the proper exposure and color correction. The end result of each photo is fantastic.
Runner-Up, Best Camera: Huawei P10 Plus
Buy on Amazon
The Huawei P10 Plus is equipped with a 20MP camera, which means it’s capable of easily capturing pictures at 4K resolutions for stunning clarity and detail. How powerful is a 20MP camera? If you took a picture of a dog, you could see each individual hair on it and even the reflection in its eyes.
Aside from its 20MP monochrome and 12MP RGB main camera, the Huawei P10 Plus’s front camera uses 8MP, so you can take high-quality selfies and see them on its 5.1-inch FHD 1920 x 1080 screen display. The P10 Plus is also equipped with a fast-running Kirin 960 CPU with octa-core cortex that clocks in at 2.4 GHz, plus an A53 processor that runs at 1.8 GHz, which delivers blazing fast speeds for multitasking with mobile applications and services. The P10 Plus has an internal memory of 64GB and includes a microSD slot for up to 256GB of memory for extra photo storage space.
Best High-End: Huawei P30
Buy on Amazon
The P30 stands out as our pick for the best high-end model, as it offers some seriously pocket-sized power for its price. Huawei’s Kirin 980 CPU processor and 6GB of RAM makes it one of the fastest smartphones around, and you’re also getting Huawei’s triple-lens camera system. It’s a slightly modified version of the excellent P20 Pro camera, with a staggering 40 MP resolution on the main wide-angle lens, plus a 16 MP sensor on the ultra-wide lens and an 8 MP for the telephoto lens. The front camera can also take selfies at a not-too-shabby 32 MP.
The 6.1-inch screen uses Huawei’s typical Full HD 2160 x 1080 pixel resolution, and the colors look sharp. Of course, it’s OLED, so you’re getting those ridiculously deep blacks that will make HDR content look great. The P30 also ditches the front-facing fingerprint scanner of its predecessor, embedding it within the screen instead which significantly reduces the bezel. While the P30 lacks wireless charging, it offers such great battery life, it feels like a surprisingly minor omission. The 3,650 mAh battery will get most typical users through a couple of days of use between charges, and the wired fast-charging tech can get you to a full charge in about an hour, which is something that you won’t get from a wireless charger.
Best for Kids: Huawei P30 Lite
Buy on Amazon
The Huawei P30 Lite is the best contender if you’re looking for a cheap phone to stay in contact with your kids while letting them play games in their free time. Not only is the phone packed with high-end features such as a 32MP selfie camera and 128GB space, but it also has a long battery life. You won’t have any problems with 4G on this phone, as it has the LTE bands 1/2/3/4/5/7/8/20/38, meaning you’ll have a quick and strong internet connection with most providers.
If your kids are especially curious, they’ll love the HiVision features of the Huawei P30 Lite. The phone can identify a host of different things, from famous landmarks and paintings to everyday objects and maths equations, giving you detailed information about them. HiVision can even translate text in pictures, making it very handy if you’re traveling with your kids.
What to Look for in a Huawei Phone
Hardware – When it comes time to selecting the perfect Huawei device for your situation, be sure to keep an eye on the hardware. If you are a photography enthusiast, be sure to seek out a Huawei with a superb camera and screen, or if you’ll be traveling internationally, many of the company’s devices support dual SIM card slots for multiple networks.
Included warranty – As Huawei has a robust worldwide presence, be sure to purchase the proper device for your country and not an international version. In most scenarios, an international version of the device will not include a warranty for your country if any part of the device was to break or fail.
Carrier – Not all Huawei smartphones will work with your mobile carrier. Whether you have T-Mobile, AT&T, Sprint, Verizon, or another service provider, be sure that your selected device will work with your existing network.
