KIWI

Kiwi fruits are a fantastic source of vitamin C. Although there is no confirmed direct role for vitamin C in hair growth, one of its major functions in the body is as an antioxidant. This antioxidant activity may help to protect the hair follicles and encourage growth. 

Of course, vitamin C is also essential for the immune system, and as we’ve already seen, when the immune system is properly balanced it is less likely to react against the hair follicles. Like many other colourful fruits, kiwi fruits also contain a wide variety of flavonoids and carotenoids, which can also act as antioxidants. Kiwi fruits also contain small amounts of copper, a mineral that is known to contribute to hair pigmentation.

GUAVA

Guavas are one of the best sources of vitamin C, containing more than double that found in kiwi fruits! As we saw when looking at kiwi juice, vitamin C may not have a known direct role in hair growth, but it does act as an antioxidant and supports the immune system, potentially helping to protect the hair follicles. Guavas, like papaya, are said to be particularly rich in the antioxidant carotenoids lycopene, lutein and cryptoxanthin which may also have a protective effect.

GARLIC

Garlic has a strong anti-bacterial and anti-fungal effect. As hair loss can result from an infection of the skin or hair follicles, applying garlic juice to the scalp could be very effective at bringing any infections under control and restoring balance. 

Garlic is also a good source of the mineral selenium, another important mineral for healthy hair. You’d have to eat a lot of garlic to get a meaningful amount, but the amounts in a juice are likely to be more concentrated!

CUCUMBER 

Cucumber again contains antioxidant nutrients such as vitamin C, manganese and beta carotene, as well as a number of flavonoids, all of which may help to protect the hair follicles.

Cucumbers are also said to be a good source of silica, a mineral that is found in our connective tissues and may help to support hair growth.

CORIANDER 

Like spinach, coriander is a source of iron, which can help to prevent the iron deficiency that typically leads to hair loss in women. 

It’s also a source of copper, which is needed for hair pigmentation, and manganese, which has antioxidant activity; and contains a wide variety of flavonoids and carotenoids. 

Coriander is sometimes said to have stress-relieving properties too – stress is another common cause of hair loss, so anything we do to relieve it can only be helpful!

ALOE VERA

Aloe vera is well-known for supporting the skin, with its healing and soothing action. Many people also swear by drinking aloe vera juice for improving the growth and condition of their hair. However, how it works for the hair is not clear. 

It may simply be due to the vitamins and minerals contained in the juice, which are said to include vitamins C, E and beta carotene (a precursor to vitamin A) as well as vitamins B1, B2, B3 and B6 and the minerals zinc, copper and iron. 

Another way it could work is by supporting the immune system. In some cases, hair loss is thought to be due to an immune reaction against the hair follicles, indicating that the immune system is out of balance.

Like onions, carrots are one of the best sources of biotin, a vitamin that is essential for normal hair growth. 100g of carrots contains around 20 per cent of our recommended intake of biotin, so making a fresh juice with a whole bag of carrots could easily give you a full daily quota!

Of course, carrots are also rich in antioxidant carotenoids, and they provide huge amounts of beta carotene, which can be converted into vitamin A in the body – a vital nutrient for immune system balance.

STRAWBERRY 

Strawberries are another fruit that is very rich in vitamin C. In fact, they can contain more than any other berry. Vitamin C acts as an antioxidant and supports the immune system, helping to protect the hair follicles. 

Like most berries, they contain a wide selection of antioxidant flavonoids and specifically anthocyanins, which give them their brilliant colour.

ONION
