Comparison Review

Comfort
The Land Rover Discovery offers rear passengers about the same room to stretch out as the Acura MDX, with comparable head- and legroom. The Acura MDX offers just a little more front head- and legroom than the Land Rover Discovery, offering the driver and front passenger a bit more room and comfort.

Convenience
You’ll be making about the same number of stops at the gas station with the Land Rover Discovery as you will with the Acura MDX, as they are both able to travel similar distances on a tank of gas.

Cost
There are a lot of factors to consider when calculating the overall cost of a vehicle. The main consideration is Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP). The Land Rover Discovery is somewhat more expensive than the Acura MDX. Another consideration is the Destination Charge, which is a standard charge for transporting the vehicle to the dealer from where it’s built. Both the Land Rover Discovery and the Acura MDX have similar Destination Charges.

Dimensions
The Land Rover Discovery is a little wider than the Acura MDX, so getting in and out of the car in a crowded parking lot may be a little more of a squeeze. When looking at overall length, the Land Rover Discovery takes up about the same amount of space in your garage as the Acura MDX.

Drivetrain
With somewhat higher torque, the Land Rover Discovery transmits power to its wheels a bit more effectively than the Acura MDX.

Handling
The Land Rover Discovery has a larger turning radius than the Acura MDX, making it slightly more difficult to maneuver in and out of tight spots.

Performance
When considering towing capacity, the Land Rover Discovery is clearly the choice over the Acura MDX for pulling heavy loads. The Land Rover Discovery has a little more horsepower than the Acura MDX.

Utility
The Land Rover Discovery offers greater seating capacity than the Acura MDX, making it a better choice for those who find themselves chauffeuring others around. The Land Rover Discovery has less cargo space than the Acura MDX, which is okay if you don’t need to move a lot in one trip.

Warranty
The Land Rover Discovery comes with essentially the same basic warranty as the Acura MDX.

Unlike the driver-only memory system in the MDX, the Discovery HSE/HSE Luxury has standard driver and passenger memory, so that when drivers switch, the memory setting adjusts the driver’s seat, steering wheel position (with optional power wheel adjuster) and outside mirror angle and the front passenger seat also adjusts to the new passenger’s preset preferences.

The power windows standard on both the Discovery and the MDX have locks to prevent small children from operating them. When the lock on the Discovery is engaged the driver can still operate all of the windows, for instance to close one opened by a child. The MDX prevents the driver from operating the other windows just as it does the other passengers.

The Discovery’s rain-sensitive wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically based on the amount of rainfall on the windshield. This allows the driver to concentrate on driving without constantly adjusting the wipers. The MDX’s standard intermittent wipers change speed with vehicle speed, but can’t turn on and off or change speed based on changing rainfall.

Heated windshield washer nozzles are optional on the Discovery to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. The MDX doesn’t offer heated windshield washer nozzles.

Consumer Reports rated the Discovery’s headlight performance “Very Good,” a higher rating than the MDX’s headlights, which were rated “Good.”

In poor weather, headlights can lose their effectiveness as grime builds up on their lenses. This can reduce visibility without the driver realizing. The Discovery offers available headlight washers to keep headlight output high. The MDX doesn’t offer headlight washers.

To help drivers see further while navigating curves, the Discovery HSE/HSE Luxury offers optional adaptive headlights to illuminate around corners automatically by reading vehicle speed and steering wheel angle. The MDX doesn’t offer cornering lights.

The Discovery offers optional heated front, second and third row seats that keep the driver and passengers extremely comfortable in the winter. Acura doesn’t offer heated seats in the third row of the MDX.

Optional air-conditioned the front and second row seats keep the Discovery’s passengers comfortable and take the sting out of hot leather in summer. The MDX doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats for the second row.

The Discovery’s Park Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, with the driver only controlling speed with the brake pedal. The MDX doesn’t offer an automated parking system.

The Discovery will cost the buyer less in the long run because of its superior resale value. The IntelliChoice estimates that the Discovery will retain 47.79% to 49.86% of its original price after five years, while the MDX only retains 40.03% to 44.9%.
