mens and womens shoe size conversion

Men’s and women’s shoe sizes differ slightly; a size 8 in a men’s shoe is not the same size as an 8 in a women’s shoe. Knowing mens and womens shoe size conversion size can give you a lot more options, especially if your feet are wide for a woman or narrow for a man.
Most times, women with wide feet can find a better fit in a pair of men’s shoes because men’s shoes are made in wider widths, while men with narrow feet will likewise find shoes that come in narrow widths in women’s sizes. And there are more shoes in the smaller range in women’s sizes and greater choices in larger sizes in men’s shoes, so if your shoe size falls on these extremes for your gender, you also might find a greater selection if you also consider shoes for the opposite gender and inches to shoe size conversion.

Measuring your feet at home is a simple enough task, and you’ll only need things that you probably already have laying around the house.

You’ll need a ruler, some paper, a pen or pencil and a chair or somewhere to sit.

  1. What you need to do is sit on the chair with your feet firmly planted on the floor. If you’re going to be wearing specific socks with these shoes, make sure you have them on so you can buy shoes that will accommodate your socks.
  2. You’re going to need to trace around the outline of your foot. Make sure the pencil or pen is upright, if you hold it at an angle you’ll draw under or too far around the foot and you’ll get a measurement that isn’t an accurate reflection of how big your feet are.
  3. Once you’ve done your drawing you’ll need to measure from the end to the longest point of the drawing.
  4. You can also measure the width of your feet from the same drawing, measuring from the two widest points of your foot.
  5. Make sure you do a drawing for each foot as usually they tend to be slightly different sizes.

When buying your shoes, remember that the UK, US and EU all have different sizes, so you will need to convert the shoe size shoes should you be buying shoes from an international retailer.

There are around 5 major size systems in place, Japanese, Chinese, US, UK, and EU.

Women’s sizes don’t necessarily mean the same size in a men’s shoe – a men’s 6 might not fit a women’s’ 6. It’s always best to measure and consult the appropriate size guide to ensure you buy the best fit for you.

It is also important to remember that sizes may vary slightly from place to place – each shoe brand might be slightly different so it’s important to try a new pair of shoes on if you switch brands.

If you did want to try and convert a men’s shoe size to a women’s shoe size, men’s shoes tend to come up a little larger, a man’s 7 would be around a women’s 7.5/8. Men’s shoes are wider than women’s shoes, this is an important consideration as shoes that are too wide rub and slip on the foot.

Below we have provided a standard size chart, although do remember that it is important to check specific brand size guides.

Selecting a Shoe Size

Should you measure your feet and if you find that your feet measure between sizes, it’s recommended that you buy a size up. This will prevent your shoes being too tight, which would quickly become uncomfortable.

If you are converting your shoe size from UK to an EU size, it is also recommended you buy a bigger size for your fit.

This is somewhat true of different style as well, if you buy a size 12 in a men’s brogue, you won’t necessarily need a size 12 in a sports shoe. The materials and shape of the shoe can all affect the way your foot fits inside a shoe meaning you might need a size up to accommodate for a shoe that is too narrow.

Wearing a shoe that is too narrow is more harmful to your foot than wearing shoes that are a little bigger than you need. Tight shoes can cause foot problems such as bunions, callouses, blisters and corns – all painful foot problems that can be avoided by paying the correct attention to your feet and their health. Take a look at our men’s shoe fitting guide for more information about getting the right overall fit.

When it comes to choosing the right men’s shoes, also remember that you need to try your shoes on with the same socks you’ll be wearing generally, make sure you try them on the end of the day when your feet have swelled slightly and, if you find a pair you love but they only have a size up – try insoles. They work wonders!

Remembering these helpful tips and ensuring you have measured your feet correctly will help you invest in a pair of comfy shoes that you will enjoy wearing.
