The 2020 Porsche Macan is part of the SUV’s first generation, which began with the 2015 model. The Macan has seen some significant changes since its debut.
For 2017, the Macan gained a standard rearview camera, lane departure warning, and parking sensors, while optional Apple CarPlay was introduced. The 2019 Macan received a refreshed interior and exterior design along with a new standard 10.9-inch touch screen, navigation, and a Wi-Fi hot spot. Additionally, the lineup was trimmed from four to two models, with Porsche cutting the Macan GTS and Macan Turbo models.
For 2020, the Macan Turbo returns to the lineup with a new 434-horsepower 2.9-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine (between 2015 and 2018 it was available with a 400-horsepower 3.6-liter twin-turbo V6). Other changes for 2020 include newly optional wireless device charging, as well as wireless capability for Apple CarPlay.
Unless you want the 2020 Macan Turbo and its new engine, look for a 2019 Macan, which is very similar to the new model and likely less expensive.

How Much Does the Porsche Macan Cost?
The 2020 Porsche Macan has a retail price of $50,900, which makes it one of the most expensive luxury compact SUVs. By comparison, the Mercedes-Benz GLC starts at $42,500, and the Audi Q5 comes in at $43,300.
The higher-performance Porsche Macan S has a base price of $59,400, and the range-topping Macan Turbo starts at $83,600. Porsche offers a seemingly never-ending list of optional features for each model, so these starting prices can easily balloon by tens of thousands of dollars.

Porsche Macan Versus the Competition
Which Is Better: Porsche Macan or Mercedes-Benz GLC?
The Mercedes-Benz GLC receives a significant refresh for the 2020 model year and ranks among the best in the luxury compact SUV class. The Macan and GLC are both excellent SUVs that share many of the same strengths. Each offers a range of powerful engines, and both have impeccable interior qualities and user-friendly infotainment systems.
These crossovers differ in some significant ways, however. Though both provide a smooth, refined ride, the GLC’s is a little more polished. The Mercedes is more suitable for a cross-country drive than a day at the track, which is where the Porsche and its dynamic steering are more at home. The GLC also offers more rear-seat space than the Macan. Know, however, that the GLC coupe body style has a low roofline that cuts into headroom. Finally, the GLC comes standard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The former is optional in the Macan, and the latter is not available at all.
With a starting price nearly $8,500 less than the Macan’s, the Benz is a compelling choice.
Which Is Better: Porsche Macan or Audi Q5?
The Audi Q5 is another perennial challenger for a high ranking in the class. It ranges in price from $43,300 to about $62,000. Compare that to the Macan’s price range of around $51,000 to $84,000. The Q5 doesn’t have the handling chops of the Macan, but it merges composed cornering with a comfortable ride. Its most powerful engine is only rated at 349 horsepower, far short of what the most powerful Macan musters. The Audi offers more rear-seat space than the Porsche and about 7.5 more cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats. These SUVs offer an almost identical amount of cargo space with their rear seats folded down.
Both SUVs have high-quality interiors and a long list of infotainment and safety features, but the Macan boasts a much better predicted reliability rating. Picking between these competitors comes down to whether you want to shell out more money for the lively Porsche or if you want to spend less for the more reserved Q5.
Which Is Better: Porsche Macan or Porsche Cayenne?
The Porsche Cayenne is a luxury midsize SUV that starts at almost $67,000 and can cost as much as $130,000. If you can afford it, the Cayenne is definitely worth considering. Both of these Porsches offer deft handling, but the Cayenne has more-powerful engines across its lineup. Horsepower ranges from 335 to 541, compared to the Macan’s 248 to 434 spread. The Cayenne also features a larger infotainment screen.
New for 2020, the Cayenne is available in a coupe body style along with the standard layout. Both configurations provide more rear-seat space than the diminutive Macan. You’ll also get more cargo space with the Cayenne. Ultimately, choosing between these two comes down to whether you’re willing to pay more for the Cayenne’s added space and extra engine power.
Macan Engine: 3 Solid Choices
You have three choices for what goes under the hood of the 2020 Porsche Macan. The standard Macan is powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder that puts out 248 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. It has enough pep for daily driving and never feels underpowered.
Next in the lineup is the Macan S and its 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 engine, which is good for 348 horsepower and 354 pound-feet of torque. The extra muscle of the Macan S is felt most when taking off from a stop. Both the Macan and Macan S can suffer from a split second of turbo lag when you hit the throttle hard at higher speeds, such as when merging or passing.
After a year away, the Porsche Macan Turbo returns for the 2020 model year, packing a new 2.9-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine that produces 434 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque. This twin-turbo power plant helps the Macan Turbo go from zero to 60 mph in as little as 4.3 seconds.
While the Turbo is undoubtedly fast, it lacks a certain ferociousness that would put the Macan up there with the best high-performance SUVs. Even the exhaust note is a little underwhelming for an engine like this.
All of the Macan’s engines are mated to a seven-speed automatic transmission. It shifts right when you want it to, kicking down under heavy throttle to deliver more power. Changes in gear are smooth and almost imperceptible.
You can equip any Macan with the Sport Chrono package, which adds a sport exhaust, an analog and digital stopwatch, launch control, and other sport response settings. It also shaves about 0.2 seconds off each trim’s zero-to-60 time.
Macan Gas Mileage: Low for the Class
The 2020 Macan gets an EPA-estimated 19 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway. Those values are poor for a luxury compact SUV. You won’t sacrifice much in efficiency by jumping up to the more powerful engine in the Macan S. That powertrain is rated at 18 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway.
At the time of writing, neither Porsche nor the EPA has released fuel economy estimates for the 2020 Macan Turbo.
Macan Ride and Handling: Toss it Around
Simply put, the Macan is one of the best-handling SUVs around. It has responsive steering, and feedback from the road is excellent. Standard all-wheel drive provides a great grip on the pavement for enthusiastic cornering.
The Macan is also practical and comfortable to drive. Its relatively small size makes it easy to maneuver in tight spaces, and the ride is plush and forgiving.
This wouldn’t be a Porsche without a host of available performance upgrades. That list includes an electronic adaptive suspension, an adaptive air suspension, torque vectoring steering, ceramic-coated brakes, and a Sport Plus driving mode.
When properly equipped, the Macan can tow up to 4,409 pounds. That’s on the high end for a luxury compact SUV.
The Macan has some light off-road abilities. It can tackle gravel trails or rutty roads leading to a campsite. When equipped with the optional air suspension, the Macan has as much as 9 inches of ground clearance. That stacks up well with larger and more off-road-oriented SUVs.
How Many People Does the Macan Seat?
The Porsche Macan seats five people. As you might expect from a driver-focused SUV, the front seats are the place to be. They offer ample comfort for long drives and provide good side support to keep you in place when cornering.
Eight-way power adjustments make it easy to find a suitable driving position. You can also upgrade to 14-way power-adjustable seats or 18-way sport seats that are more bolstered. The standard upholstery is a combination of leather and suede, and multiple variations of full leather upholstery are optional.
Accommodations aren’t as good in the second row. Even average-sized adults will probably want more legroom, and headroom is nothing to brag about either.
Macan and Child Car Seats
There are two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the rear outboard seats, plus a tether anchor for the middle seat.
Macan Interior Quality
The Macan cabin is replete with top-notch materials, and everything is tied together in a sleek, attractive design. Like most Porsches, there’s a nearly endless list of interior customizations.
You can spring for trim accents including wood, carbon fiber, and brushed aluminum. You can also choose to get many surfaces – including the dashboard, steering column, center console, and under-seat storage – wrapped in leather.
Macan Cargo Space
Cargo space is not a strong suit of this Porsche. The Macan offers just 17.6 cubic feet of room under its hatch. Fold the rear seats down to open up 52.9 cubic feet of space.
Both of those figures are low for the class, but it’s still enough room for several suitcases.
Macan Infotainment, Bluetooth, and Navigation
The Porsche Communication Management (PCM) infotainment system operates via a 10.9-inch touch screen. This display has brilliant graphics, and the menu structure is easy to learn. You can also customize certain aspects of the screen and system.
Directly below the infotainment screen are a few buttons and knobs that control volume, audio source, and tuning. The center console around the shift knob is littered with many buttons. Here you’ll find climate controls, among other things. The layout can look daunting, so it may take some time to learn where everything is.
Some standard infotainment features include a 10-speaker stereo, navigation, satellite radio, and four USB ports. Optional upgrades include wireless device charging, a Bose or Burmester premium surround-sound stereo, and Apple CarPlay. New for 2020, CarPlay has wireless connectivity capability.
Is the Porsche Macan Reliable?
The 2020 Porsche Macan has a stellar predicted reliability rating of 4.5 out of five from J.D. Power.
Porsche Macan Warranty
Porsche covers the Macan with a four-year/50,000-mile warranty. Most luxury vehicles have similar warranty lengths.
How Much Does It Cost to Insure a Porsche Macan?
The cost of insuring a Porsche Macan will depend on a variety of factors, including your deductible, the level of coverage that you want, and the type of insurance that you choose. Your age, gender, location, credit score, and driving record can also have an impact on your insurance rates. Check out our car insurance guide to find the best policy for you.
Macan Crash Test Results
Neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has crash tested the 2020 Macan. This is common for luxury and performance vehicles.
Macan Safety Features
The Macan comes standard with lane departure warning, front and rear parking sensors, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and a rearview camera. Optional active safety features include adaptive headlights, a surround-view parking camera system, lane keep assist, blind spot monitoring, and adaptive cruise control.
Macan Dimensions and Weight
The Macan is 15.4 feet long. Its curb weight ranges from 4,099 to 4,430 pounds, and its gross vehicle weight rating is between 5,534 and 5,688 pounds.
Where Is the 2020 Porsche Macan Built?
Porsche builds the 2020 Macan in Germany.
Which Porsche Macan Model Is Right for Me?
The 2020 Porsche Macan comes in three trims: the base model, Macan S, and Macan Turbo. Each trim has a different engine, so picking between them will likely come down to how you weigh your budget against how much engine power you need. In that sense, it’s worth stepping up to the Macan S and its extra 100 horsepower for what’s ultimately not much more money than the base model. All models come standard with all-wheel drive and a seven-speed automatic transmission.
The 2020 Porsche Macan starts at $50,900. The base engine is a 248-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder. Standard features include leather and suede upholstery, eight-way power-adjustable front seats, tri-zone automatic climate control, a power liftgate, heated outside mirrors, rain-sensing windshield wipers, front and rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, lane departure warning, and a universal garage door opener. A 10.9-inch touch-screen infotainment system includes a 10-speaker stereo, navigation, satellite radio, and four USB ports.
The Premium package costs $3,110 and includes front and rear heated seats, auto-dimming interior and exterior mirrors, a 14-speaker Bose surround-sound stereo, Apple CarPlay, and adaptive headlights. The Premium Package Plus adds all the prior features as well as a panoramic roof, ventilated front seats, proximity keyless entry, remote start, and 14-way power-adjustable front seats with memory settings. This package costs $6,500.
Other optional features include full leather seats, 18-way power-adjustable front sport seats, a surround-view parking camera system, lane keep assist, blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, a heated steering wheel, rear side-window sunshades, wireless device charging, and a Burmester surround-sound system.
Available performance enhancements include an electronic adaptive suspension, an adaptive air suspension, torque vectoring steering, a sport exhaust, and ceramic-coated brakes. The Sport Chrono package includes an analog and digital stopwatch, a Sport Plus driving mode, launch control, and other sport response settings.
Porsche Macan S
The Porsche Macan S features a 348-horsepower turbocharged V6 engine. It starts at $59,400 and offers a nearly identical list of standard and optional features as the base model.
Porsche Macan Turbo
With a base price of $83,600, the Porsche Macan Turbo comes with a 434-horsepower twin-turbocharged V6 engine. Additional standard features include 18-way power-adjustable front sport seats, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a 14-speaker Bose surround-sound stereo, an Alcantara headliner, and an adaptive suspension.
