On the downside, the engine’s stop-start system is rather jarring, and it’s a pain to turn it off.

The optional V6 engine is only slightly zippier in day-to-day driving. The V8 is a powerhouse, however. This engine can launch the SVAutobiography model from zero to 60 mph in just 4.5 seconds, and that turn of speed is echoed by the SUV’s sonorous exhaust note.

The Velar gets an EPA-rated 21 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway when equipped with its four-cylinder engine. That’s pretty good for a luxury midsize SUV.
