BEST MANGA 2020
New year, new manga. A lot of new manga, to be honest. Between popular ongoing series and new titles making their English-language debut, it can be difficult to keep track of what’s coming out. That’s where this list comes in. I looked at various publishers’ release schedules and picked out the most noteworthy and best manga 2020 has to offer. It promises to be an exciting year, if these series are any indication.
GIVEN BY NATUSKI KIZU
Do you love music? What about high school rock bands? Are stories about finding love again after a tragedy a favorite of yours? Ritsuka Uenoyama is a guitar-playing prodigy who’s lost his zest for life. That changes when he meets quiet Mafuyu Sato, who carries a broken guitar around with him everywhere. While the story behind Mafuyu’s guitar is sad and the burgeoning relationship between him and Ritsuka is lovely to see, it’s the relationship between their bandmates Akihiko and Haruki that will grab your feels and refuse to let go.
A MAN AND HIS CAT BY UMI SAKURAI
BEYOND THE CLOUDS BY NICKE
Are you a fan of Studio Ghibli films? This manga’s for you. Theo works as a mechanic in a city where you can’t see the sky. As you can guess, this makes him yearn for adventure in the outside world. He soon gets his chance when he meets a winged girl who has amnesia. But while fixing her injured wing is simple, regaining her memories is another matter entirely.
BLOOD ON THE TRACKS BY SHUZO OSHIMI
Shuzo Oshimi is a master of slow-build psychological horror and instilling overwhelming dread in a single page. In Blood on the Tracks, Seiichi Osabe enjoys a seemingly normal life. His busy father works hard to provide for the family. His beautiful mother dotes on him. Then one day, he realizes that his mother’s overprotectiveness may cross the line to obsessive and abnormal.
DOWNFALL BY INIO ASANO
If you’re balking at the idea of starting a new series, I feel you. Don’t worry, though. Inio Asano has you covered. Downfall explores what happens when you achieve your dreams and it’s not at all what you expected. It follows a mangaka who has finished his first series and is trying to start a new one—and make it successful, naturally. Unfortunately, he hates the reality of the manga industry and his marriage is falling apart. If you’re looking for a feel-good manga, this is not the title for you. But if you love Asano’s brand of dark, psychological storytelling, it’s worth checking out.
ROSE OF VERSAILLES BY RYOKO IKEDA
It’s been a few years since Udon announced they’d licensed this classic best manga. 2020 is a little later than I thought we’d get an English-language version, but I’m glad this work is finally available. Born a French noblewoman, Oscar was raised as a son by her father and becomes the leader of Marie Antoinette’s palace guard. Faced with the excesses of Louis XVI’s court, she soon becomes torn between loyalty to the nobility and her desire to help the oppressed lower classes.
DEMON SLAYER BY KOYOHARU GOTOUGE
Launched in 2016, Demon Slayer isn’t exactly a new manga, but it flew under the radar for many people until last year’s brilliant anime adaptation. I wanted to highlight it in case you missed this series the first time around. The manga features a familiar premise: a boy becomes a demon slayer after his family is murdered. A few things set this series apart, though. It’s set in early 20th century Japan instead of the more common Tokugawa and Meiji eras. Instead of being brash and in-your-face, protagonist Tanjiro is a kind, pure-hearted boy. And most of all, Tanjiro and his now-a-demon sister, Nezuko, have a beautiful sibling relationship.
MAGIC KNIGHT RAYEARTH BY CLAMP
Magic Knight Rayearth has been licensed by various North American publishers over the years, but Kodansha has given it a new home just in time for this 25th anniversary edition. It centers on three girls who are transported to another world in order to save a princess. Sounds familiar, right? Alas, this is a CLAMP manga, so things are never quite as they seem.
SAIYUKI BY KAZUYA MINEKURA
Saiyuki was one of the very first English-language manga I bought during the manga boom of the early 2000s. It’s been in licensing limbo for years, so I’m thrilled to see it return for a new generation of readers. A highly stylized retelling of the Chinese classic Journey to the West, it follows Genjo, a Buddhist priest sent West to stop the resurrection of a demon king, and his three demonic companions.

10My Hero Academia
Kohei Horikoshi’s My Hero Academia is one of the hottest works in Shueisha’s Weekly Shounen Jump magazine right now. It follows the story of Izuku Midoriya, a young boy who lives in a world where 80% of the population has grown to inherit different superpowers, known as Quirks.
Unfortunately, our protagonist is among the unlucky ones as he doesn’t get to inherit a Quirk, and his dreams of becoming a Hero are seriously hindered, consequently. However, with the current Number One Hero, All Might, seeing a spark in him, Izuku embarks on a journey to take over the mantle of the ‘Symbol of Peace’ and attempts to become the greatest Hero ever.
Vinland Saga is the work of Makoto Yukimura and is certainly something that we feel you all should be reading right now. The first season of its anime adaptation was recently wrapped up, forcing lots of fans to pick up the manga and read the adventures of Thorfinn from there onwards.
The manga follows the story of Thorfinn, the son of one of Jomsvikings legendary war hero, Thors the Troll. Unfortunately for Thorfinn, his father is caught in an act of betrayal and killed right before his eyes, scarring his mind. Thorfinn swears vengeance on Askeladd, the man he feels is responsible for the death of his mighty father.
8Komi-San Wa Komyushou Desu
Oda Tomohito’s Komi-san wa Komyushou Desu is a gem you should definitely invest time in, especially if you love reading high school romance and slice of life stuff. Komi-san traces the story of Komi, a beautiful girl with an onyx glare, someone who people feel is above their league.

The truth is, however, that she’s simply horrible at communicating with others. With the help of Tadano, the only person who knows of her problem, Komi aims to right the wrongs in her and becomes more like everyone else.
One of Shueisha’s Weekly Shounen Jump’s best new works, Jujutsu Kaisen is the work of Gege Akutami. If we were to recommend the next face of Shonen to you guys, Jujutsu Kaisen would certainly be it. It follows the story of Yuuji, a master of track and field who simply sits around and wastes his ability initially.
His time at the Occult Research Club is mostly spent doing nothing. However, Yuuji suddenly decides that the time to slack off has come to an end when Megumi Fugishiro arrives at the club, explaining the presence of cursed objects to him. Surprisingly, even the apparently master Megumi Fugishiro isn’t able to handle things, so Yuuji has to step up and take responsibility for himself. You better believe he doesn’t slack off anymore.
Atsushi Ohkubo’s Fire Force (Enen no Shouboutai) is also quite popular among the fans right now, the reason being the first season of the anime that wrapped up recently. The manga is quite exquisite and is set in a world where people randomly burst into flames and proceed to die.
For the purpose of preventing harm, an agency, known as the Fire Force works relentlessly. What’s more, their newest recruit, Shinra, is quite strange himself, possessing the ability to produce flames from his feet and set off at rocket-like speeds. With Shinra in their ranks, the long process of getting to the center of this mystery ensues.
Kingdom is quite possibly one of the best war mangas out, all down to the incredible work of the illustrator Yasuhisa Hara. The manga is one of the best works of Seinen right now, being set in the Warring States time period.
The story is mainly focused on Shin, a poor boy born with nothing to inherit, yet having the lofty ambition of becoming the dream of the Great General of Heavens, one of the greatest titles there has ever existed. On the way, Shin faces quite an incredible amount of hardship yet he keeps on pressing forward with unwavering determination. Don’t let Kingdom’s anime fool you. The story is quite possibly one of the greatest ever written and something you should definitely read this year.
4Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba
Koyoharu Gotouge’s Kimetsu no Yaiba sprung forth as one of the best new anime in 2020, but the manga has been nothing short of fantastic for quite a while now. In fact, with the conclusion closer than ever, now is the time to pick up the manga and read from where the anime left off.

The story is about a young boy from a peaceful village known as Tanjiro, a coal-seller. To their dismay, his entire family is slaughtered by demons, except for his little sister, Nezuko. To add salt to the wound, Nezuko is somehow turned into a demon. Tanjiro now sets out on an adventure to restore his sister back to normal and get revenge on the demons.
Kentarou Miura’s Berserk is an incredible story of Guts who struggles to change his destiny and save himself and his partner, Casca, from the curse of their brand. What’s more, Guts looks for the trail of the man who branded them with the mark, Griffith, and seeks vengeance on him.
With monstrous strength, a majestic dragon-slayer sword, and grit, Guts sets out on an adventure against his fate to save everything that’s precious to him. Although not new, Miura’s Berserk is quite easily one of the best works of fiction out there, and if you haven’t read it already, you should go ahead and do so right now.
2Attack On Titan
Attack on Titan’s story, written and illustrated by Hajime Isayama, is about humanity that has survived within walls, saving themselves from flesh-eating Titans. Although their freedom is taken away from them, they get the privilege of living safely.
For a hundred years, the walls that humanity erected haven’t been breached, until the present day. With Titans appearing out of nowhere, Eren and Mikasa witness a gruesome massacre of their family, among other humans. With great determination, Eren vows to destroy all the Titans himself, bring peace, and free humanity forever.
Illustrated by Eiichiro Oda, One Piece is Shonen Jump’s biggest manga right now and possibly ever, and rightfully so. The manga follows the adventures of Monkey D. Luffy, a boy who aims to become the King of the Pirates.
To achieve this goal, Luffy must find the treasure of Gold Roger, the One Piece, that he hid somewhere in a belt of sea known as Grand Line. Moments prior to his death, Roger, the greatest pirate who had acquired wealth, fame, and power, drove countless pirates to sea by announcing the existence of One Piece, triggering the Great Pirate Era. Luffy’s goal, although hard, is marked by an incredible sense of adventure, humor, and of course, massive pirate-fights.
