Heads up! An essential guide to wedding hat etiquette
21 Nov 2013
Hats are a longstanding wedding fashion tradition. What other chance do you get in the year to truly dress up your head? Dependent on your choice, they can add a touch of style and class to your outfit, or some flamboyant fun.
Did you know that it’s tradition for all female wedding guests not to remove their hat until the mother of the bride has? All the more reason to ensure that you’ve got the perfect headpiece!
But choosing can be tricky – with most of us humble citizens not having the excuse to splash out on luxurious headgear every day, you may not have much prior experience when it comes to choosing your ideal hat. It can be difficult to know where to start. Take a look at this guide for all you need to know about wedding hats.
Percher hats are ideal for more petite faces and frames. Traditionally, percher hats should always be worn tilting to the right. If they are going to be decorated or embellished in any way – with flowers, feathers or jewels – ensure that your accessories are placed on the right too. Tradition dictates that ladies tilt and decorate to the right whilst men stick to the left – plus you’ll all look much more coordinated in the pictures.

If you haven’t quite worked up the courage to go all out with a humongous headpiece, a fascinator can be the perfect happy medium. They are not as overbearing and mean that you can still style your hair as you want, whilst adding a pop of colour and style. Fascinators are great if you’re attending a less formal wedding too.
Wide brimmed hats
Ladies with rounder faces can usually pull off a wider brimmed hat with a curled brim. We’d suggest shopping around and trying on as many as possible, as wide brimmed hats can vary massively, dependent on the colour, fabric, brim and height. If you can, try it on with your hair styled as you will wear it on the day and with your high heels, so you can get a better idea of how it will look. For your colour, a bold bright colour which contrasts with your outfit can make for a striking look.
Floppy sun hats have a retro feel, but are rapidly coming back into fashion. They’re a chic, stylish way to work a big hat at a summer wedding, without risking it looking tacky or over the top. And, the great thing about this hat is that it works with almost any face shape!
For the bride…
The bride’s headwear is obviously the most important, and the right piece can really help her stand out from the crowd. Even if you’re opting for a simple veil there are a wealth of options – do you want to take the traditional route with a veil which trails down to the floor, or a chic, short veil? Do you want lace, netting or tulle? A bride can couple her veil with a fascinator, headband or tiara. Or, for a different look, try a wide brimmed hat or a floppy white sun hat, which can look stylish and elegant with a simple white dress. Whatever you choose, remember that it’s your big day and your chance to stand out – and make sure that you work that headgear!

We do not hire hats out.
Predominantly each fashion house will design a choice of matching headpieces which are sold alongside their beautiful outfits, this helps to create the overall finished look. Choosing your own style
We stock a wide variety of wedding headpieces to suit everyone’s individual taste and personality, from a traditional wide brimmed Wedding Hat to a saucer style Hatinator to a dainty Fascinator. We offer advice and guidance but above all it is so important that you feel comfortable and confident with your overall look on your special day. Finding the perfect headpiece can also depend on the venue of the wedding and can help you in making your final decision. Do not feel you should do as everybody else does, choose a headpiece that suits you and that is appropriate for your Special Occasion.
Colours and Tones
Your headpiece is the finishing touch to your Mother of the Bride or Special Occasion outfit, so to compliment it with a matching print fabric or a matching colour is a must. Sometimes less is more so if you have an outfit in a soft delicate tone we would suggest a true matching colour for your headpiece so that the overall look flows, whereas if you wish to be a little bolder you could opt for a stronger tone as long as it contrasts and is in the same colour palette as your outfit.
Our expert staff are always on hand to help and guide you. Do not be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and try something different. Wedding Hats and Fascinators have moved on dramatically over the years with added fabrics, embellishments and beautiful feather appliques and do not forget different facial shapes suit different styles so try lots on until you find that perfect one for you.
