Beyond a bit of a love-hate relationship when it comes to finding the right fit, we love shorts. And come summer, we sport a pair on an almost daily basis. Denim cutoffs are always a safe bet, but this season, there’s a wide range of shorts making rounds that we can’t pinpoint, which is our favorite. Bermuda shorts, biking shorts, and even leather pairs are all appealing. What all these styles have in common is that they’re the color we’ll never stop wearing and one that will never be out of style: black.
What really drew us to black shorts this season is how effortlessly our favorite Instagram style stars have been styling their go-to pairs. They’re polished, laid-back, classic, athletic-inspired—truthfully, the list can go on and on. Look ahead to see what we mean and to get inspired as well.

If all black is too dark for you and white on black too colour-blocked, you’ll be glad to know there are many more options available to combine with black shorts. A way to add some colour without going all the way to white is to pair with a printed or graphic tee, or a floral short-sleeve. The trick here is to not goo too bold in the print colours – you’re still looking for a dark base with a muted print, perhaps with a bold accent colour sparingly applied.
Another option is to use muted tones and solids with a texture, for instance a grey denim shirt or a dark blue chambray shirt. Layering is a great option to introduce more colour to an all black outfit, for instance adding a navy cardigan to a faded black shorts and tee look.
SO YOU LOVE SOCKS
As we’ve said before, socks and shorts are currently having a comeback moment, and wearing high black socks with your black shorts is a fashion statement rather than a faux-pas. Choose chunkier tube socks over dress socks, and feel free to experiment with colours and to pull them up.
So it’s hot and it’s summer and the occasion calls for formal yet you know even linen pants will make your shoes turn into hot tubs: black tie in black shorts is your best move. Pair with white dress shoes or white leather sneakers and make sure your shorts are tailored. It takes a confident man to pull it off, but done right and it will lift both your style and comfort to a different level.
